Gateway Profile 5 monitor issues

I have been asked to repair a few Gateway Profile 5 All-in-one PCs. This is my first experience with any all-in-one units and thus far, I am not impressed. The issue at hand is that upon power-up, all lights flash, processor fan, harddrive, etc. all come on as expected but, the monitor does not initialize. After roughly 15 seconds the "Power Save Mode" screen is displayed and nothing happens. The harddrive and processor fan will continue running indefinitely but, nothing else will be displayed across the screen. As possible alternatives, I have plugged-in an old CRT that I have and it will not come out of power save mode either. I have manually disconnected the power and data connections from the motherboard to the factory lcd monitor and still cannot get an image on the secondary CRT.

Does anyone have any experience with this issue? I have seen a few threads elsewhere that somewhat reflect the same problem but, no one has discussed an answer to getting the original lcd working again.

Re: Gateway Profile 5 monitor issues

Yeah.. I've got one of those that just crashed on me recently. It is a certified piece of junk. The unit just received some TLC with a new power supply and a gig of ram and a 160 gb HD. I run the gutsy distro on mine. One fine day it I load a CD into the drive and it just quits. So I assume the motherboard gave out and open it up. All the connectors look fine, no burn marks either. No leaking capacitors either. I tried connecting the power supply and a red light glows in the extreme right of the mother board for a few seconds. The power supply in these are useless. Without an external fan around , they heat-up like crazy. So I looked at it and at the ends the voltmeter gives me a reading of 12.77 which I think is what it should be. However the red LED light on the power supply fluctuates between red and green. I wonder if that is the problem. I'm in two minds as to if i should just find another 180watt-12V supply and rig/soder up the connectors? These units seem to be too finicky about their power supply.
