Need an AGP card for old Socket A PC
I'm seeking some recommendations from experienced builders. I need an AGP video card for an older desktop system I'm building from some spare parts. I read the posted article on selecting a video card, but am still unsure.
The parts on hand are an Athlon XP1700+ (Palomino core), DFI AD73 PRO mb (VIA KT-266A chip set), 512MB of PC2700, and an Enermax 350W psu, model EG365P-VE FMA Ver. 1.2. I don't plan to use it for gaming, but I do plan to upgrade to an LCD and want a video card with a DVI connector, and preferably one that will display in high def. on say a 19" to 22" monitor. The motherboard manual says the AGP slot is a universal AGP that supports AGP 2x and AGP 4x. The article advised me to get a card with DirectX 9 and at least 128MB. Almost all of the cards I've looked at with DVI connectors say "AGP 8x" or "AGP 4x/8x", have either 128MB or 256MB, and DirectX 9. Sometimes their specs will say that an AGP 2.0 slot is required, but I never see "Universal AGP slot" as a requirement. What do you recommend? |

Hi
![]() This card will work: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16814127203R It can run with an AGP 4x motherboard and doesn't require a lot of power. Max resolution: 2048 x 1536. Last edited by Deleted090308; 03-08-2008 at 02:20 PM. |

Re: Need an AGP card for old Socket A PC
How high def of video? Because older machines do struggle with high def, and when I used to have a 6200 it didn't playback high def very well at all. Like high def video game and movie trailers.

Re: Need an AGP card for old Socket A PC
Thanks for the link! It's no longer available from Newegg, but I'll check on ebay.
In answer to the question "How high def?", I'd like 1920 x 1080p, but if that's not feasible given the other hardware constraints, then 720p at a minimum. Thank you both for the posts! |

Re: Need an AGP card for old Socket A PC
The 6200 was "in stock" when I posted the link.
