Hi everyone,
Am having a really annoying ongoing problem. I'm on a 1.73ghz, 1GB RAM, HP Pavilion DV2000. Just recently I switched to Ubuntu from XP and, although I really liked it, I began to encounter strange problems when I booted up and when I unplugged / plugged either the power cable or USB stuff. The system would act as if it were going to freeze, then strange vertical lines would appear. It looked an obvious graphics driver issue, so I downloaded the correct drivers for Ge Force 7200 but this did no good, so I took Unbuntu off (regrettably!) and installed Vista. Unfortunately, the problem remains and, if anything, seems to have worsened. I have noticed that if I leave the laptop off for a while (assuming whilst it cools down?) then it increases the chances of it booting up correctly. I have read on other forums that this may not be anything to do with the drivers - and it that its more than likely going to be a hardware problem. Some have suggested that it may be the RAM that is knackered? Any help or suggestions you can give are greatfully appreciated, Gary |

Re: Bizarre display / malfunctioning
It wasn't doing, no.
But then again it wasn't happening at the start of using Ubuntu, which makes me think that something went wrong with the hardware mid-way through using Ubuntu? |

Re: Bizarre display / malfunctioning
Something that really confuses me is the fact that it will load up absolutely fine every time in Safe Mode.
Maybe this suggests my original theory that it is a hardware problem is incorrect (!?). |

Re: Bizarre display / malfunctioning
The computer just hang when you take out the USB drive? Is it froze, which means you cannot do anything, even move the mouse?
How if you're not using USB cable or didn't plug in/out the power cable, is the computer working fine?

Re: Bizarre display / malfunctioning
I know that if the issue was in Ubuntu then it could have been Kernels issue but for it to maintain in Vista sounds like maybe the original issue was created going from XP to Ubuntu
If you havent deleted your partition from XP i would reformat your drive and recover from the partition and then if you still wanted Vista upgrade it then |

Re: Bizarre display / malfunctioning
No, when I was taking out a USB device (or the power cable) I was getting fuzzy, vertical lines across the page which would eventually get worse and (more often than not) crash the PC. The mouse was vaguely working in the background.

Re: Bizarre display / malfunctioning
OK, sorry I know I am back-tracking on this one, but I now think that this looks to be a DRIVERS issue.
I have followed the advice and gone into Control Panel --> System and completely uninstalled any NVIDIA drivers, leaving me with a 'standard VGA driver'. Since this has happened, my PC has booted up every time completely fine. Windows installed updates the other day and brought me back to NVIDIA drivers the other day and completely screwed everything up! So I uninstalled again! Is this ok? Will I REALLY miss NVIDIA? |

Re: Bizarre display / malfunctioning
Hi again grholden. Sorry for the late reply.
So it is a driver issue? Try to create a system restore point first. Then, try to download and install the nVidia driver. Post the link of download here so that I can know which driver you are installed. Is it the right one? Then, restart and see if the computer works fine. If it is not working right, we might need to find a old version of driver for you. Anyhow, try to do the instructions I posted above first
