Persistent crashing with 8600gt
Sorry for a semi-repost; same issue, but I've figured out/tested a lot more with it. Anyways, after I got a new Verto 8600gt 256 mb card every single game that I have is crashing. They happen at random intervals; sometimes its after 2 hours, sometimes its after 30 seconds. What happens is the video locks up and gets distorted (the screen tears up and down every 10 pixels or so), and the sounds loops and eventually stops. I can't force the computer into standby and no keyboard shortcuts close/minimize the game; only option is a hard shutdown. The crashes happen independent of gpu temp (anywhere from 60 to 75 c), so its not a heating/ventilation problem. I got rid of my old drivers and ran driver cleaner pro (twice), so there's no trace of my old drivers left as far as I can figure. I've ran memtest and it came back clear, I've ran a video memory test and its come back clear, I've done an artifact check with a few different programs and it came back clear... not sure what else I can try. Quick system specs:
650 watt bfg tech power supply 2x 512 DDR SDRAM- not sure on brand, came with system Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 2.0 GHz processor XP media center edition SP2 Asus A8N-LA Motherboard - Thinking this might be the problem, I can't find update drivers for this anywhere. Also, this board only has a 12v1 rail, when my power supply has lines for 12v1 and 12v2- does this mean I'm only getting 20a? (PSU listed as 20a each for 12v1 and 12v2) I've heard both 18a and 22a as the minimum over the 12v for a stock-clocked 8600gt. To elaborate on system specs: PoS HP 'media center' desktop. Only reason I have this is because I was in college and parents were paying for half, and didn't trust me to assemble my own. Getting to my wit's end here, I've tried all the common tests I can think of or has been recommended and I keep getting the exact same crashes. And this is the last time I buy a computer off the shelf instead of building one

Re: Persistent crashing with 8600gt
40 minutes and counting without crashing. I got this generic error message the second I started, but the program didn't close or stop and I didn't lose system stability.
HP vs15 flat panel monitor NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT 1024x768 WIN5.1 Service Pack 2 DirectX 9.0c installed Generic application error. ERROR: -2005530518 Source: Initialize3DEnvironment |

Re: Persistent crashing with 8600gt
Kind of embarrassed I forgot to check that, but after updating it I'm still getting the crashes. In fact it now happens instantly in WoW (other games still have the random time frame though before a crash)

Re: Persistent crashing with 8600gt
BFG Tech as I said above; model no. is BFGR650PSU. For the 12V rails it says on the box and the supply itself: 12V1; 20A, 12V2; 20A. Not sure what to say, they might just be lying?

Re: Persistent crashing with 8600gt
I hate to say it, but that is not a very good unit. I helped a member awhile back that had the same unit and it wouldn't handle a single 7600. He took it back and exchanged it for the same unit, and got the same result. He bought an OCZ GameXtreme (if I remember correctly) and the problem was solved.
I also had a friend with same unit, that was having all kinds of stability issues and it eventually took out his motherboard on it's way to graveyard. I had the same unit in one of my rigs, and although I had no issues with it, I replaced it before it had a chance to kill my system. I can't say for sure that the PSU is your problem, but I can say that leaving it in your system is risky venture. I know the unit has a lifetime warranty, but that only covers the PSU. Not the other hardware that it might take out with it when it dies. |
