Video card not receiving sufficient power...

Alright so I got a friend to put my computer back together for me (he's much more a hardware whiz than me) and since then I get this error message:

To protect your hardware from potential damage or causing a potential system lockup, the graphics processor has lowered its performance to a level that allows continued safe operations.

It says it's not receiving sufficient power... what can I do? I have a Geforce 7900 GS. Thanks

My power supply is the EXACT SAME ONE that was in before so that's not the problem.

Re: Video card not receiving sufficient power...

Welcome to tsf Nox. Wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't ask what the make model and wattage of the psu was. Just because the psu worked before doesn't mean its not the problem now.

Re: Video card not receiving sufficient power...

i received the same error message recently when installing a Geforce card. Turns out there is a power socket on the actual graphics card to supply extra power. you should see a white block on one end of the card which is a socket for a 4 pin power lead.

If there is no lead plugged into it then take a look at your power supply and check for a spare 4 pin power lead and Very carefully plug this into the socket. It will only fit in the socket 1 way so make sure it's the right way up.

I know i don't need to say this but for safety purposes i'll say it anyway. Make sure the computer is unplugged and switched off when you try this as you dont want to damage the pc/graphics card/You.
