[SOLVED] Cannot load ATI 2600XT driver: splash screen freeze

I am upgrading an XP sp2 system to a dual LCD monitor display. My PC is built on an Asus P5W DH Deluxe i975X Socket 775 motherboard which has worked well for about 10 months. Added an Asus EAH2600XT card (ie ATI Radeon HD 2600XT) and connected two 22" LG LCD monitors L226WTQ. Shiny new stuff...

The system starts by using the default XP setting: default monitor, no adapter settings. Which means that the card, the cables and the two monitors are working. But when I want to complete the upgrade I hit a wall. I Cannot install the video card driver. I am stuck with the default settings: low res, no single landscape across two screens etc.

I started with the installation CD and then downloaded latest ATI drivers from the AMD web site. Bu it's always the same problem: freezes on the bright-red ATI splash screen just when it's time to install the driver. And I mean 'freezes': mouse pointer and keyboard are dead, you have to restart. Eliminating the card, the cables and the monitors I even went back to an old graphics card and my old VGA CRT monitor - same thing: splash screen freezes.

One other thing. There is no 'driver' setting on the Monitor tab in the advanced settings box of the 'Display Properties' box. I guess I am stuck with the XP default. So I cannot install the monitor driver that came with the LG screens.

I have DirectX v9.0 and Dot Net 2.0 is installed.

Any hunches greatly appreciated.

Re: Cannot load ATI 2600XT driver: splash screen freeze

Thanks. I have now solved this problem.

I did in fact go through the Add or Remove Programs panel but did not see anything relating to video or display. However, as one does, I went around this block again and recalled that the Nvidia drivers used on my Asus motherboard come in a bundle which includes IDE, Ethernet, PCI etc. And this appears in the 'Add or Remove Programs' as simply 'NVIDIA Drivers'. No mention of display or video. However, when you click on Change/Remove it comes up with a check box list and one of these is 'Display driver'. Aha! I thought...

Checked this for the uninstall, restarted, made sure that my Zone Alarm anti-virus was disabled, launched the ATI 2600XT driver install. Same thing. Splash screen freezes. Damn!

After a restart however, I visited Device Manager and noticed that I now have an unknown Display Monitor device (yellow question mark etc.). I selected this and this provided me with a means of updating the driver directly. In other words - this worked! I finally managed to install the video card driver.

Once this was done, I could install my LG monitor drivers.

To anyone in a similar situation, reading this at the very beginning of the install - count yourself lucky, you probably just saved yourself a day and a half of intense frustration.
