Help! CPU fan loud/fast on boot, no video card output, but integrated video fine
Alright, I can't figure out what's going on here. When I came home the other night (I'd left my computer on), there was no video signal to the monitor. I restarted manually and the CPU fan spun loud and very fast for a few seconds before reverting to a normal speed, but there was still no video output (tried both DVI ports plus S-video). I heard the Windows music, though, so I knew the computer booted. I switched from my video card to the integrated VGA hookup and got a working signal from that.
This made me thought the video card was fried, but considering the issue with the CPU fan, I'm not so sure. I'm not too techy, so I don't know what else to check/try. Please help! Specs (let me know if I'm excluding anything important) - Dell Dimension 4700 running XP CPU: Intel Pentium 4 530 3.0Ghz RAM: 2GB DDRII GPU: Nvidia Geforce 6800GT PCI-E Mobo: Dell 0M3918 PSU: Antec Truepower 2.0 550W (dual fan version) |

try the card in another computer to check it
if it's ok then your psu is probably no longer supplying enough power on the 12v+ to run it see wha the bios lists it's output at

Re: Help! CPU fan loud/fast on boot, no video card output, but integrated video fine
thanks for the suggestions! unfortunately, the bios doesn't list voltages/temps (thanks, dell) and i had no luck with a couple different diagnostic programs (speedfan, etc.). any other way to check psu output, short of getting a volt meter? and since i don't have another machine to try the video card in, i'll probably have to take it to a store and pay for a quick test. ah well...hopefully i can just replace one of the two and i'll be back up and running.
any other suggestions are very welcome! |
