video card problem ?

Hello TSF, I'm new here. In a bit of a pickle with my computer acting up. A while ago, my PSU seized and since I got a new one, my gaming has never been the same.... It's horrible, every game laggs to death. I thought it was my video cards problem which was a 7800GT so I bought a new one. My current one is ATI HD 3850 256MB . Me and my friend both bought this PSU and his computer runs fine, he had a 7800GT previously like mine also. So I don't know if it's the video cards problem or when the video card seized, it might have damaged something in mobo ? I switched the ram around and tried with 1 gig for both of them to see if one ram card was defective and nothing budged. Here are my computer specs. Any have the slightest clue of what's wrong ? :( Thanks for help in advance

PS - Before my PSU seized, I was using the 7800GT and World of Warcraft, Battlefield 2 ran flawlessly at highest graphics. Now the games barely run... Dunno if that info helps but yea...

Re: video card problem ?

My first concern is the power supply, it is only providing 38 amps on the 12v rails. There might not be enough to run the motherboard and video card at peak power draw. You should also run the HDD diagnostics and Memtest86 to see if the old power supply crippled any other components. Mike

Re: video card problem ?

For Windows you will want the "Pre-Compiled package for Floppy (DOS - Win)" or the Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip) depending upon your preference.
For the iso, unzip and save the iso to the hard drive, then burn to cd with your favorite burning application.
For the floppy, double-click on the "install.bat" file, put the floppy in as prompted, wait for it to write.
Put the disk in and boot with it. Let it run the seven default tests. Each set of seven tests is a "pass". It will run pass after pass forever until you reboot. Mike

Re: video card problem ?

Have you taken the heatsink off the cpu lately? Is it loose? Does the cpu fan spin when you hit the power button? Is the fan plugged into the motherboard? Please reset the cmos by moving the jumper next to the battery or removing the battery for 10 minutes, your choice. Use caution to get them back in their original positions. Mike

Re: video card problem ?

Did you clean the old thermal paste off the cpu and heatsink and replace it with new thermal paste?

Re: video card problem ?

Any decent computer shop should sell it, are you in the USA. Radio Shack, Newegg, a local computershop. We recommend Arctic Silver 5, there are other brands that are good. Please do not restart your computer until this has been done. Mike

Re: video card problem ?

I got Nexxtech Heatsink Compound, I put it on according to the instructions on the link you gave me MJZZZ and now when I turn the computer on, the fan doesn't turn on. It says CPU overheating, I go into bios and check for the fan and it says NA and Ignore. Doesn't show it running on RPM. How can I get it running again ? :(

EDIT : And yes I did plug the fan connector back onto motherboard

Re: video card problem ?

When I go into Bios, Hardware Monitor, the fans for CPU and such are at [N/A] and the only other option is Ignore.... What's happening ? Why are the fans not running ? :( CPU hits temperatures up to 90° C

Re: video card problem ?

You'll need to find a fan header on the board that is working, if you can't find a working pin header you can buy an adaptor to run the fan off of a molex connector. It could also be possible that the fan has just gone out. Whatever you do, do not run the computer without a working cpu fan. Hopefully damage to the cpu hasn't already been done. Mike

Re: video card problem ?

you need to replace the fan and connect it to the correct header as one of the pins sends a signal to throttle the cpu back when it overheats to avoid burning it out
