x1800 Overheating 80c
Hey guys my card is shutting down when reaching temps of 80c. I have ATI tray tools and have jacked my rpms to 100% on my GPU. At around 71c+ I also begin to see artifacting, which was my orignal reason for downloading tray tools to jack my fan speeds up to see if I could get rid of the artifacting. Now I have this annoying shut down of the GPU along with these high temps/artifacting even with 100% speed. Maybe the fan speed is causing extra heat, there may be a more optimal fan speed for me? Here are some system specs.

Re: x1800 Overheating 80c
I have cleaned the dust from the heatsync of my GPU and I am currently running my computer with the side off. I have overclocked through the CCC automated OC'er but never ran it at an overclock due to artifacting. My clock speeds are noted in my system info. The card is less than a year old.
I worry I may have burnt my fan out to some extent running it @ 100% speed. With CCC running my fans I was getting a rediculous amount of artifacting. When I first downloaded tray tools the artifacting was non existent, so I assumed it was the temp's causing this artifacting and not the card it's self. Re: x1800 Overheating 80c
Hi Mcnuke, it has been my luck also with ATI cards that they run hotter than I like, plus trial and error to find a set of drivers they will run on. I was reconfiguring some computers yesterday and I installed an X850 with a flashed bios to unlock all 16 pipelines in my sons school computer. It also ran hot, so ended up removing the heatsink and fan. Upon inspection the thermal material they used was not making full contact with the gpu. After a good cleaning, I used Arctic Silver 5 and reinstalled the heatsink. It did drop the temps about 4c at idle, that might make a difference for you. At one point when I had the card in my office machine, I had strung an 80mm fan in the case blowing directly at the video card. Yeah, it wasn't very professional looking, but it did drop the temps of the card 8-10c under load. Seeing as how it might still be under warranty, I would contact the manufacturer about the card overheating and causing shutdowns before removing the heatsink and fan. Mike

Re: x1800 Overheating 80c
Thanks for the help man, I actually removed the sticker that covers the fan unit/heatsync that signified the sapphire company due to curious cat sydrome
. This may inhibit me for a potential RMA. I will look into the thermal paste and search for a fan that could strap to my case, any reduction in centigrade would be a god send. Ill check back with any updates that may or may not work for me. PS. If I can reduce the temp's on my GPU, I would be interested in anything I can do to boost the power of my card. You mentioned flashing the bios of your son's card. If you could tell me how many pipelines are currently active on my x1800? What would be the proper proceedure if any to unlock these unused pipelines. Note my currently installed drivers. Any suggestions of drivers that that you prefer? Re: x1800 Overheating 80c
I had mine in the lower left corner, aimed slightly lower than straight on at the video card. Suspend it by all four corners with strong string, far enough away from the side of the case to draw air freely. This in addition to an 80mm fan pulling air out of the back under the power supply will get a good circulation of air in the case. Mike

Re: x1800 Overheating 80c
It seems I had an ungodly amount of dust blocking my cards air intake. I proped a fan pointed @ the intake and I am now running 43c under load. No more artifacting or shutdowns, seems dust was the killer ><. Thanks to those whos responded.
