ati 3870 problem booting

ok my computer consists of:

ASUS Mobo P5ke
Intel Core 2 duo 2.66 1333 fsb
300gig hd
4gig pc6400 ddr2
500watt power supply

i just built this new system, maintaing the old hard drive and power supply while updating the rest.
before upgrading the computer i bought a 3850 for my old computer and it was still having the same problem -blank screen-.

my power supply is about 2 years old and did not have a pci-e connector so I bought the adapter to connect two 4 pin connectors.

this new system is having the same problem when loading up, everything else is fine, no Mobo warning beeps, but still not screen.

The video card is getting some power that I do know (the fan is going, in the back of the case it is releasing air where should be).

I have the Diamond 3870 gddr4 512mb version.

Is it not getting enough power? is to much power being split between the HD/DVDRW drive so the video card isn't getting enough power? Do I need to just upgrade my power supply?

Ideas? Was bummed when the 3850 didn't work so decided to ugprade my whole system (old p4, old mobo and x850xt video card). Any help would be great :)

Re: ati 3870 problem booting

Is your operating system 32bit or 64bit? Try taking out 2GB of system memory, reset the CMOS (remove the little battery for 30secs), and then see if it posts with vga.

Also, what brand of PSU is that?

Re: ati 3870 problem booting

it is 32bit I do beleive (XP-Prof Editin) Do have a copy of vista but hesitant to install.

Also, the old video card posts just fine =\. Only having a problem with the 3850/70 posting (They require the 6-pin power connector)

The PSU is made by Aspire

Re: ati 3870 problem booting

Right, first of all, take out 2GB of ram and see if it works. Your OS can only address 3.2GB of memory, so 512Mb goes to the GPU + system RAM.

You have 4GB of system RAM and 512MB of GPU in your system now.

Take 2GB out.

Re: ati 3870 problem booting

Alright did that and, that did not change anything.
With the 2gigs in DC mode, same problem with the 3870, the x850 loads up just fine like before.

Could the Video card not be getting enough power (The 4 pin connectors split to the DVDrw drive and fans about.)

Re: ati 3870 problem booting

Is it the PSU problem? Every other component is working just fine, Memory, CPU, is fine, updated the BIOS for the new motherboard, just loaded in the 3870 again and is not posting yet again.

Only conclusions i can come to bad video card (which i highly doubt) or the 4pin to 6pin adapter isn't cutting it and the 3870 isn't gettin the proper power.

Re: ati 3870 problem booting

Well before running to Frys Electronics thought I would connect it via Svideo to the LCD Tv in my room (Could not find any DVI to VGA connectors).

Booted up with the S-video cable, installed the drivers and is working.

Now just the DVI isn't working for my normal LCD monitor.

Gr.

Idea Re: ati 3870 problem booting

I had the same problem. I upgraded from an Sapphire X800GT to the 3870. The card originally wouldn't fit because it sat over my SATA2 connectors and some other connection cables. So I moved it to my second PCIe slot. Result: boot - no picture. After pulling my last hair out I swapped SATA 2 connectors and moved cables and placed the the card in the other slot. Boot. Perfect picture. Hope this helps.
