EEK! -Really need help- Driver updates result in low resolution and 8-bit color

I've run out of ideas on what to try. I recently ran a disk check on my computer. After the check completed successfully my computer went back to the desktop in low resolution and 8-bit graphics. It wouldn't allow me to change either setting in the display properties. After uninstalling the drivers for the card and restarting, the resolution and color returned to normal. However, now the card was rendered useless. Here's the part that I can't figure out. I got a new motherboard, the problem still existed; installing any graphics drivers gets me low resolution and 8-bit color. So I tried a new hard drive, same problem. I tried a new fresh install of XP, still happens. Lastly, I even got a new video card. It still does the exact same thing.
My card is the EVGA GeForce 7900 GS, and the newer card is an EVGA GeForce 8600 GT. Motherboard is MSI K9AGM2 with AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual core processor. It's really and entirely new computer now, I've replaced everything and the issue still persists. Anyone have any ideas what on Earth could be causing this?
