Confused 8800 GTX Slowing My Computer Down

Well I picked up an XFX 8800 GTX the other day, installed it in my machine, downloaded the latest drivers (169.25), and went to play some Crysis. I started the game up only to realize I was only getting about half the FPS I was from my X1950 Pro! I'm very frustrated because I spent a lot of money on this card and to get the exact opposite effect is bewildering.

The only thing I can think of is my system is bottlenecking the GTX, but that doesn't make much sense to me either. My full system specs:

CPU: AMD 3800 X2 @ 2.20GHz
RAM: 2x1GB and 2x512MB Kingston DDR PC3200
Mobo: MSI MS-7125 nForce4
HDD: 2x74GB 10K RPM Western Digital Raptors
PSU: 550W

Any ideas?

Re: 8800 GTX Slowing My Computer Down

1.) Are you running this 8800GTX in Windows Vista? If you are then you're running Crysis in DX10 Mode which will reduce you framerate but will look amazing.

2.) Are these beta drivers or have you installed or the actual newest release?

3.) Crysis is an next generation game and even the 8800 series have issues playing them at decent framerates. my 8800GT gets 50fps with all settings set to medium. Also there is a 3-10% performance difference between my 8800GT and your 8800GTX (unless yours is overclocked).

Check your settings and see if you are playing the game at higher settings compared to your older card. Let us know what happens!

Re: 8800 GTX Slowing My Computer Down

what brand is your PSU? How many amps are on the 12V+?

You really need 650W+ to run that card at its full potential.

Re: 8800 GTX Slowing My Computer Down

1. I turned it down to DX9 high, no AA, 1024x786.

2. Newest release.

I was playing on DX9 high with both cards. My X1950 getting 15-20fps, and the GTX not even breaking 10 fps.

Re: 8800 GTX Slowing My Computer Down

PSU details?

Check your temperatures and PSU voltages with SensorsView or SpeedFan

My System

Re: 8800 GTX Slowing My Computer Down

Thanks, now can you do the same while running a fullscreen 3D game so we can compare the idle and stress values. Alt-tab back to SensorsView after a few minutes while the game is still running to get an accurate reading.

As you're using Vista, have you installed DirectX 10?

Have you installed the motherboard chipset drivers and the AMD Dual-Core Optimizer?

Open the case to see the PSU details. Make/model, total watts and the amps for +12V.

Re: 8800 GTX Slowing My Computer Down

Actually I took the card out and put my X1950 Pro back in. I'll do what you described tomorrow. Thanks for the support.

My System

Re: 8800 GTX Slowing My Computer Down

My system specs are very similar to yours (see My System on the left, below my name) and I get over 30fps in Crysis on medium to high settings with an X1950Pro 256mb at 1440x900 widescreen. I'm using a 650W PSU with 52amps for +12V. Your 550W PSU might be the problem.
