Crysis + eVGA 8800GT = Problems

When playing Crysis, the game goes very choppy as if the fps was cut in half. This is just playing the computer, as I do not play online. It happens all the time.
I don't know if the GPU is over heating. It has been running at 57c (60c with side of case off) with no load and at about 84c while playing Crysis. I took everyone's advice and downloaded RivaTuner. I set the fan to 85% for game play. Game still went choppy one minute into playing the game. I am fustrated more so because I just spent $1650 on this computer just to play this darn Crysis game

Before buying this card, I've read reviews that people can play crysis at the highest resolution with everything turned on with this 8800GT, So I set my game resolution (inside Crysis/Options) to 1920X1200 and 2X Anti-Aliasing (Anti-Aliasing can go up to 8X in game). Nothing is running in the back ground while playing games. I even turn off the Anti-Virus.

Can someone assist me?

My new computer specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 Conroe 3.0GHz LGA 775 (Not overclocked)
eVGA 8800GT 512mb card (not over Clocked)
GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS4 Rev. 2.0 LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard
PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Quad (Black) EPS12V 750W Power Supply
CORSAIR XMS2 2 gigs DDR 800
Sound Blaster X-Fi sound card
Windows XP Pro
Gateway FDH2400 24" wide screen PC monitor.

When you say go all high, do you mean just the resolution?

Also this game, after just seconds of playing will completely crash with a window stating that Crysis has encountered an error and asking if I want to report this to Microsoft.

Re: Crysis + eVGA 8800GT = Problems

I "think" I've might have figured my issue out. I waited for the game to crash again and then I quickly looked at my temps in Sensors View and found my CPU to be 98c (about 210f)

I only have the stock heat sink and fan. Is this normal?

Re: Crysis + eVGA 8800GT = Problems

Reapply some thermal paste to the CPU. Instructions here. If that doesn't help, fit a Zalman.

Try turning off anti-aliasing in Crysis temporarily to see what impact it has on fps. This slows the game down more than any other setting.

How many case fans do you have and how are they positioned? Are they all free of dust, spinning and unobstructed by cables?

What are your temperatures and PSU voltages at startup with no programs running, and after playing Crysis for a few minutes? Alt-tab back to the desktop while Crysis is still running and note the temps/volts.

Re: Crysis + eVGA 8800GT = Problems

When he said 84c, I'm pretty sure he was talking about his GPU, not CPU. (if im wrong.. then his processor is probablly melting lol.) Either way, 84c isn't ridiculously hot for a high end graphics card like that 8800GT. My 8800GTX card runs at 62c idle and doenst raise to much while gaming. 84c is a bit high, but do try turning the AA down, see what that does.

No I think it is quite clear that he ist talking about the CPU in the second post due to the fact that he is talking about his stock HSF etc. HOwever sensorview can be wrong. Also the GTX has a different architecture than a GT so temperatures are not really comparable. Also 62oC looks rediculously high for idle BTW.

BKSinAZ, that is a really sweet machine. Can you take a picture of the inside of the machine for us so we can make an assessment of the airflow? Also, if it is new (assuming), why not take it back to where you bought it. I do agree with scottster, the GPU shouldn't idle at that temp. Mine idles at 42oC with 100% fan, or 52oC with normal. It never gets that high under load though. Also, a GT will not run Crysis on maximum settings. A GTX (which is only 3% faster) will play it at 10FPS on very high and a GT will play it at 5FPS. You need 30.

Re: Crysis + eVGA 8800GT = Problems

yea, i'd say its a heating issue as well. Also, since he was talking about his CPU rather... you can't always trust those malware programs. For instance.. SpeedFan is wrong half the time, so that means SensorView could be wrong (which it probably is). My point is you should look at BIOS to double check those temps. IF BIOS says you are overheating, then we have a problem. Maybe there is no thermal paste between the processor and HSF.. or maybe one side of the HSF came lose, i would check, its quite important.

as for my card, it idles at 59c.. that is perfectly fine for a 8800 GTX.

Agreed, however remember the GT is a different architecture than a GTX, thus the temperatures are not comparable.

Mine runs at 700/1760/2000 at 48oC idle and 60oC load. The GTX couldn't do that at those temps. PS, that gets me over (just) *edit* 13,000 in 3DMark06

Also with 100% fan (sounds like a vacume cleaner) it runs at 38oC. not bad at those clocks.
