hi, so i got the 8800 ultra, and it works fine but is overheating. when gaming, in call of duty 4, everything is maxed out and very smooth, howeveer when i play for about an hour, the game gets frozen, the sound starts to stutter annoyingly and the game crashes.

sensorsview shows idle temps at around 67°, and when the game crashed, i saw temps of about 85°. obvious overheating issues.

in my previous thread a while ago, i got a pci cooler that faces the GPU at the bottom of my case. i guess its not enough. i will probably take that pci cooler out so i can save some power and put in one of these in the links. can someone please tell me which you would choose?

To be honest ( and i am sure i will be corrected) but 85oC doesn't sound that excessive. Are you overclocking any of your components? What is your case airflow like?

well i opened my side panel, and placed 2 fans on top of the metal part of the card (its backside). yeah if that isn't TOO hot, then i wont waste any money, but then if this card overheats and dies (panic), i will hang myself. i wasted all my money on it and want to keep it quiet cool.

btw.. i haven't overclocked anything as i dont even know how..

The 8800's run hotter than previous generations. I think you are ok with those temps. Making sure your case airflow is good will take the stress off your psu and gpu. I would make sure you have removed all dust and and ensure you have a good input and exhaust fans set up.

I have two 120 mm fans on the front and 2 on the back. Plus 1 120 mm fan for the cpu and a 80 mm fan for the GPU. I also have a 40mm fan for the northbridge (i overclock). Ok this is overboard and it sounds like a bloody jet taking off, but i always have music going or gaming, so that is fine for me. If you need a quite alternative make sure you buy good quality 120mm fans (bigger is quieter), and ensure you balance the input and output. Also make sure you keep all cables neatly tied back to improve case airflow. It is very important, particularly with your card. Improve your case airflow dude.

yea i will dust out the case now. overheating still bugs me though because most games CRASH because of the overheating. its like all the fans that surround the GPU are not good enough that is why i thought about buying another cooler. but i guess i will try to dust it out and see. my side panel is always open, this way i actually get less dust than i did when the case was closed.

DO NOT USE A VACUME. go to you pc shop and get a can of compressed air! works well. make sure you keep the power cable plugged in (it has the earth that way). Get right in there with the nozel and get all that dust out. Close the pc case as if you get the right airflow balance, you will be better off with it closed.

I got an idea, why don't u use nVidia nTune and increase the fan's speed? that may work

85 degrees shouldn't cause you to crash, nor would it be considered over-heating for the Ultras. They are naturally very hot like that. 85 isn't too bad. I've seen them go up to 95 on load.

If you haven't already, like suggested above, turning the fan speed up to 100% could help a little bit. Otherwise, though, unless you have any special cooling (after market fan or water cooling), those temperatures are pretty normal. The GTX models can be much the same way.

Not to say lower temps wouldn't help. Cooler hardware is always better. The Ultras are already pretty vicious though. Don't expect to see a massive improvement by gaining lower temps or anything. You should be running games fine even with those high temperatures on an Ultra. The only reason I'd want to with those cards was if I was trying to over-clock. But yes, by all means, if you can find a way to lower them, go ahead.

As for your custom fans you posted, I'm not familiar with the AeroCool one, but it does look nice. Of the two, I'd probably ponder picking up that one, but only because the other is so huge. The ZeroTherm model will easily take up more room than the standard dual slot space an Ultra takes up on it's own. Granted, if you don't mind the size, it can probably do you good and definitely see some lower temps if you take off the metal casing and just let it freely cool the copper heatsink. I'd imagine it would start giving you grief if you ever decided to go SLI though.

my PSU is OCZ gameXstream 700Watts. im some what certain that is enough for the card. maybe im wrong i dont know.

this only seemed to crash Call of Duty 4, and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter games. i even have Oblivion for PC full high settings including draw distance sliders on full and it didnt crash but those 2 games did.

PS: if these average idle temps of 70-75 degrees are sustained, cant it fry my video card or something? the last thing i need is for this card to die....

Possibly, but, as i said, try to get nvidia ntune, and then, increase the speed of the graphic card fan, that may work and keep the card cooler.

And yea, honestly, those are extremely high temeratures!! with that, i can fry and egg!! man, just try that and tell me the results.

Are you overclocking? The PSU looks fine. I would suggest doing a memory test. in the meantime however download this programme and post your specs
