video card die out?

so i was encoding a dvd into avi took like 12 hours to finish. and then i turned on Counterstrike but then my computer rebooted and showed some weird looking color most of the time.. but sometimes it doesnt show the weird colors but i dont see my desktop i only see my desktop screen. i try uninstalling it but its still the same. im afraid of shutting down/rebooting my computer because i will get those random colors on my screen. btw, my cpu is amd xp athlon 2200. and yeah.. maybe i shouldo of never encode anything becuz of my old pc? is it the video card problem or cpu or what do u think? hope someone replys. thanks for the time everyone!
btw, happy veteran's day!

ps. my video card is called nVida 5200 128mb and i have 1gb ram.

if you have any experiance with building comptuers you could try and locate the problem physically. if you tried removing your video card and pluged your monitor into the inbuilt and you dont get your funny colours. you may well have found yourself a solution.
