Video card or monitor?

I have a brand new Dell 14" wide screen laptop. However, it doesn't support the screen resolution 1280x1024 that I need for a certain application.

Is the screen resolution dependent on the video card or the monitor?

Will it work if I hook up an external monitor that supports that resolution?

Thanks!

Re: Video card or monitor?

What model is it? My mom's Acer has a widescreen that's 1280x800, so it wouldn't support 1280x1024 either.

Re: Video card or monitor?

I've tested the monitor already and I'm able to use the 1280x1024 but I wasn't sure if that is because of the video card. Would it support the same resolutions if I hook it up to a laptop?

Re: Video card or monitor?

External resolutions on modern laptops are often just limited by the monitor you connect.
