7800 GTX Latest Driver Problem

Not sure if this post should be here or in Driver/Game support so will try here. System specs are :-
XP Pro SP2
Dell Dimension 8400
Ram 4GB
C: 80GB NTFS
F: 160 GB SATA NTFS
NEC DVD_RW ND-2500A USB Device
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4163B
Creative X-Fi Audio Processor
NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX
RAM 256.00 MB
Driver Version 6.14.10.8421

Issue is trying to install latest Nvidia Driver 163.71 It will not install. The only driver that will install is 84.21, which i read is the most stable but, I have issues with HL2 as in keeps crashing. I have installed 'Powerstrip' and have had some success in adjusting card performance profiles but the 'crash' still seems to happen, but now more randomly. (Prior to Powerstrip it was at the first 'Map' load everytime). So i have involved Nvidia support but they arn't really!! I would like to get the latest driver installed for trouble shooting HL2 but I seem to be stuck with 84.21. Any help or advice much appreciated.

Re: 7800 GTX Latest Driver Problem

Reboot and press the F8 key to get into the boot menu. Choose Safe mode and continue. Once you're in, use the Add/Remove Software control panel to remove the current drivers. After that you can reboot and install the 163 series drivers.

Re: 7800 GTX Latest Driver Problem

thanks for the reply.....but i have been through all procedures for removal and installation of drivers.....all to no avail....the latest from Nvidia is to update the system BIOS but not to sure if thats the answer....using dell bios A8 and apart from this problem I see no need to go the BIOS route. IMHO think they are grasping at straws with that one. I have removed all signs of any drivers using 'Driver Cleaner Pro' and the driver will still not load. I have asked DELL for help but they have declined totally as the machine is over 2 years old and its a card they don't recommend.....so thanks but any other ideas would be great...
