Need Help With XP Issue
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to fix this issue. I have had a lot of problems getting into Safe Mode and came discover that it always hangs on a file called AGP440.sys. I was told that the fix for this is un-installing the driver for my video card (a GForce2) and then I could get into safe mode that way.
During the bootup sequence for Safe Mode AGP440.sys still showed up and hung there so I rebooted my PC as normal. I see the Windows XP screen as I do normally during every bootup ( the Copyright in the corner and even the bar which shows that Windows is trying connect). However, then the screen goes blank but I can still hear the Windows chime which you hear which always happens when you get to the desktop. It's obvious that the fix for this AGP problem doesn't work the way Microsoft and other techs have suggested. If I manage to get to DOS prompt using the XP CD Repair is there any way I can load the driver for my video card that way? I can put the software on a CD and load it but have no idea what what command is. I tried taking my HD out of my computer and making it a slave drive on another Windows XP computer but the BIOS wouldn't recognize the second drive and I'd hate to have to re-install Windows just to bring the default Windows driver back considering that I had data on the computer which I was unable to back up before this happened. I am thinking of getting a new video card or finding an older one that might work but I thought there might be a fix out there for this issue first. Would a new video card at least allow me to get my screen back in Windows video default mode? Thanks in advance for the help. Last edited by catprotector; 10-16-2007 at 07:22 PM. |

Re: Need Help With XP Issue
Hi there. Its most frustrating where video driver problems are concerned. I'm having bother a the moment with a nvidia card. For your problem i would try a small program called 'Driver Cleaner Pro'. This will remove all aspects of your problem driver and that will allow you to get into safe mode. The normal way of removing drivers with 'add/remove' in control panel does not clean out everything. Its worked for me and I would start there. Download at http://www.drivercleaner.net

Re: Need Help With XP Issue
OK. I think your next step would be to try another video card in the PC. Thats if you have one. Even an older type just using one of your pci slots will suffice to get into windows and remove the drivers. Of course it could be that your video card is done for but i don't think so because you do get some reaction out of it at the start??

Not anymore. After disconnecting my zip drive the whole computer shut down. When I booted back up I not only did not have USB capability but also have no video capability as well. Both my CD ROM drives power up, my network light comes on and of course the light to the motherboard is lit up but I get no beeps or anything like that. |

Re: Need Help With XP Issue
no beeps is not right.....i good boot should give 1 beep........any more than that means different things on different machines so i suspect your problem is more serious than just a driver problem. can you get into the bios setup? if so set all to default settings and try a reboot
