Cant get nvidia 8600 GT to work

I just recently bought a NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT 256mb and I cant seem to get it to work. I mean it is clearly on my computer because I can see it when I go to adjuct the screen resolution. I tried installing the drivers from xfxforce.com but they all say that they do not match my OS. My OS is windows vista home premium...

So heres my specs:

Pentium 4 3.2GHZ
225GB HD
1012MB RAM

I thought I had the card installed because the driver worked when I tried with a totaly clean install and after just putting the card in the slot. But when I go to open a game it just exits out of itself without any error message. But for a game called soldat I do get an error saying that I need directx8 at least...

I ran dxdiag.exe and it says I have directx 10, any ideas? Perhaps I just cant find the correct vista driver? I have completely updated my windows so I am just clueless as what to do, can anybody point me in the right direction?

Hello, and Welcome to TSF.

Go to the link above, choose the correct OS, and click search. You'll also notice a link on the left side of the page for some Vista hotfixes for GeForce cards. If the driver only doesn't solve your problems you may want to try the hotfixes as well.

Post back, and let us know how it goes.

I have done both of those things and they both dont work, I have tried both 64bit and 32bit... Ive tried getting drivers from multiple places and they all dont seem to work...

What games are you playing?
Are they Vista compatible?
Have you got the latest game patches?
Which Vista do have? 32bit or 64bit?

These games all worked earlier today untill I put my graphics card in this afternoon... So yeah, they work with vista. All of my games are updated and I believe i have 32bit that is the colors right?

Vista and XP are both available 32bit and 64bit versions. This has nothing to do with color options in display settings.

Did you build the system yourself, or is it a Dell, HP , etc.?

What graphics card did you have before you got the 8600?

Oh, I have a HP Pavillion a6019h

And before I got this graphics card all I had was the only simply built into the motherboard by Intel.

Oh and one more thing, for some reason I am able to play this demo game that came with the card... But that is the only game that I can open...

Try reinstalling one of the games that will not work.

Have you tried reseating the card again?

Did that twice and here is a pic of the the info on the card. The disc that comes with the card apparently does not have any vista drivers on it so ive read. I have tried them off their site but no luck. I mean it looks as if its installed and everything but nothing that requires graphics works... And i have tried running the games in combatibillity mode

Ahhh you don't have directx 9!!!

Download it and install it, everything should be fine, make sure your graphics card drivers are also installed.

I just went to that link and I guess I installed the directx but nothing has changed, everything is still working the same... Maybe it has soemthing to do with it saying 0 video memory?

I also get this when I look at the driver, perhaps it is the wrong version?

DX10 is backwards compatible to DX9, DX8, etc. DX is installed automatically with Windows. Those are the certified drivers.

Since you are able to play the Demo that came with 8600 and your Vista screenie looks good, I don't think it's a hardware issue.

Besides Soldat, what other games are you having issues with?

DX10 is partially backwards compatible. Have you checked for patches that apply to the game?
