DVI Question
The output on my video card is DVI-D (Geforce 7800 GT). The Input on my monitor is DVI-I (Mag innovision 1440 x 900). Do I just use a DVI-D cable to connect them? Do I just find a cable that says DVI-D? Will the pins all fit?
I'm afraid I won't be able to hook them together since the female ends look different (one has analong and other doesn't) My monitor is also 1440 x 900. Will the DVI work ok? I'm guessing it will have to be in dual link. |

Re: DVI Question
Your 7800 GT probably has DVI-I outputs rather than DVI-D. Almost all video cards except very low-end cards have DVI-I outputs rather than DVI-D. In any case, you only need a single link DVI-D cable to run at 1440 X 900 but a dual link DVI-D cable will work fine too. I'd get a dual link cable anyway because they barely cost more than single link cables and will be more useful in the future at high resolutions. Dual link DVI-D cables are the "standard" DVI cables these days. They're compatible with both single and dual link hardware. This page gives the gory details on DVI compatibility if you'd like more info.

Re: DVI Question
Thanks for replying. It turns out I was backwards. My Video card is DVI-I, and my Monitor is DVI-D. So if I order this cable I will be good?

Re: DVI Question
That cable will work but you don't really need to spend that much money for a 6 foot cable. Any non-crap 6 foot DVI cable will give the same results. All of the 6 foot male-to-male dual link DVI-Ds would give you the same result. I tend to avoid the total cheapies (out of paranoia) so I'd probably get this one which is somewhat cheaper when you count shipping.

Re: DVI Question
Man... I can't find a decently priced dual-link cable to save my life here in San Antonio!! That article was enlightening, though.

Re: DVI Question
I once payed almost $40 for a single-link cable... Then I learned that my new LCD screen came with a DVI cable. For the dual-links at the same store I would have spent $60+.
