Seemingly simple task of watching my computer on my TV

Sounds simple, thought it would be a no brainer... instead it has sucked countless time out of my day in what has been a thusfar futile attempt to connect my Sony Vaio VGN-FS760 (all stock with service pack 2) to my TV.

Prefacing with the input that my computer knowledge is admittedly limited: Here is my set up as I understand it to be:

1. I have the above named computer with NVIDIA display GeForce Go 6400. BIOS version 5.44.02.30.07. Forcerware version 77.47

2. I have said computer hooked up through the VGA out port to the RCA in on my TV.

Seems pretty simple.

I have gone to my display and tried every combination possible extending my desktop to the secondary monitor, etc etc and soforth...

I troubleshot through Vaio Central and the directions there did not jibe with what I was seeing on my tabs...

I have gone to Vaio support and received this oh-so-helpful advice: "We're sorry for the difficulty you're experiencing with the Sony VAIO VGN-FS760/W Notebook. It is shipped with VGA out. We would recommend you check with your favorite computer retailer, major computer magazines, or search the Internet for available options to address your request."

I have updated drivers, troubleshot, shut-down, restarted, you name it... AND.... the tv remains a black screen. A quiet black screen.

All I really want to do is watch movies and tv shows downloaded on my iTunes on tv sets both at home and on my travels (hence the RCA input).

If you are a knowledgeable, patient and benevolent person that knows how to perform this task, Please, Please, PLEASE help me!

Hi,

Firstly, what type of TV are you trying to hook up to? Make sure the TV is set to AV (if it has more than one AV channel, make sure it's set to the one you're connecting to). I understand you've tried a few things already, but run through the following steps for me.

Click Start -> Control Panel -> Display -> Settings -> Advanced -> GeForce Go 6400 -> nView Display Settings. Under "nView Display Mode", select Dual View. Click Apply. That should enable the second screen. If it has, then you should be able to adjust resolution and colour from the Start -> Control Panel -> Display -> Settings screen.

If it's still not working, let us know and we'll go from there.

Re: Seemingly simple task of watching my computer on my TV

Thank you so much for entertaining my crisis!

I am connecting to an AVL tv through component 1 (RCA input). The TV specifics: AVL ALT3211AD 32" 16:9 ATSC HD/Multi-system LCD.

I ran through the set-up again as requested and also turned everything off again, checked connections, turned on the tv, then the computer... no picture. I checked the settings and they were intact.

I am doing all of this in Japan... could it be something silly like the refresh rate? The Vaio was purchased in the US in 2006 and the TV is US spec (I have a Sony DVD(region 1)/home theater/receiver hooked into the HDMI input and a regionless DVD player hooked into component 2 (for Japanese videos) as well as a satellite dish input via coax into the video slot).

The tv does have a VGA input on the back, but I travel a lot and really need the flexibility of the RCA leads from my VGA output.

Does any of this tip you off as to where I am messing up?

Thank you again!

Re: Seemingly simple task of watching my computer on my TV

Hi,

Am I correct in stating that you are using an adapter cable to go from VGA to component video?

It might be a format issue. For example, in the US the default format is NTSC. Your laptop is outputting in VGA though. Sometimes you need to have a TV with a VGA input to use it as a monitor.

Can you try on an external computer monitor to see if its a problem with the laptop or the TV?
