[SOLVED] Overclocking a 8400GS - need a better cooler

Hi all

Does anyone know of any better coolers that will fit an ASUS 8400GS? I can't find any online.

It doesn't have the standard holes that my 7800gtx has. The heatsink looks very much like a Northbridge cooler with a 40mm fan attached.

Does anyone know if a new Northbridge cooler will work for it?

Thanks

EDIT: Uploaded a picture. The two black pins are pushpins which go through two holes on the circuit board. Does it look like a standard size for a Northbridge cooler?

Re: Overclocking a 8400GS - need a better cooler

I don't want to sound like a stick in the mud but the card you have is a 64bit interface from what i could see. Over clocking this type of card is really not going to yield much of an improvement due to the limitations of the interface. I could be wrong but I think your 7800GTX had a 256 bit interface which could handle a lot more info than your current card. If on your current system with the core 2 6750 your 8400 will be your bottle neck and no amount of overclocking can change the 64 bit interface

Re: Overclocking a 8400GS - need a better cooler

Sorry - I should have elaborated. The 8400gs isn't a replacement for the 7800gtx. It's a spare incase the 7800 dies. I haven't another card so i bought the 8400 as a cheap spare (only cost £30). I was thinking to overclock it so i could still play some of my games with a tolerable frame rate should the 7800 die.

Re: Overclocking a 8400GS - need a better cooler

Update - used a spare Northbridge cooler from a friend. Fitted it and it works a charm! A standard two pushpin chipset cooler works fine. Lowered the temps from idle 51C to 40C and load 65C to 45C. And without a fan now so it's completely silent. Now I have plenty of headroom for overclocking if i ever want too.

Almost a pointless experiment really but i'm pleased it worked!
