Re: 8800GTS When drives installed, black screen on windows load.

But the PSU that I am currently using suplied enough power for the first month, surely this other one will supply enough for at least 10 minutes, just long enough to power it up and see whether it works or not.

But, if you say it won't work, then okay.

Are you sure that it is the PSU that is causing the problem?!?! I don't really wan't to wait a month to get a new PSU, only to realise that it didn't fix the problem, and have to go get whatever it is that is causing the problem...

It most likely is. Even if it isn't you are playing Russian roulette with your computer by not getting a quality power supply. Remember, a power supply can power a component, but it can also take that power away in a way that destroys it.

Re: 8800GTS When drives installed, black screen on windows load.

So you're saying that I shouldn't use my PC at all untill I get a new PSU?

I have 2 assignments due soon...

This leaves me with several options:

1. Find some kind soul who will allow me to insall JDK1.6 and JRE1.6 on their PC, and do my assignments on their PC.

2. Find some other kind soul who can give me a loan to get the PSU.

or 3. Play Russian Roulette as you say.....

*places head in hands*

P.S Nice little animation in your signature..... I wan't to know what that yellow dude says at the end though...

Run with the onboard video. You can do that with your current PSU.

Re: 8800GTS When drives installed, black screen on windows load.

Okay, sounds good. To do this should I:

a) remove my GFX card from the computer entirely, and plug the monitor into the port on my motherboard.

b) just leave it how it is, but not install the GFX drivers for my GFX card.

c) Just leave the card in there, but transfer the cable to the port on the motherboard.

P.S I don't need to worry about a VGA-DVI dongle, coz my monitor came with both a VGA and a DVI cable...

P.P.S What about the XION Supernova as a PSU. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817190012

Option A. Use the motherboard CD to install the onboard video drivers.

Hmmm, turns out that my motherboard doesn't have onboard GFX... Any other suggestions.

And thanks for the prices.

See if you can pick up a cheap 7300GS from a local store. That card only takes 16w under load so you should be all set.

Re: 8800GTS When drives installed, black screen on windows load.

Heya,

Okay, Synchroe is my local store. I just checked their prices, and they have a 7300GT (not a GS) for AU$115

http://www.synchroe.com/Product/VideoCards/tabid/67/Default.aspx

if I am going to spend $115 on a temporary solution, I may as well just wait and get the PSU, since I can't afford the card anyway.

I asked dad if I could use this computer, and he said no! Grrrr. Anyway, my old computer is still here, I was going to give it to Nan, but considering the circumstances, I'm sure she will understand if I need to hold on to it for a while. Problem is, I am not getting any display with that one either. I know it used to work, but dad has stolen the old GFX card from it (256MB ATI Radeon 9550) and put HIS old card in there (a mangy 128MB ATI Radeon 9200) And not the computer isn't working. I have switched it on and off about 6 times so far, and it only made it to the desktop once, it adjusted Catalyst to the new card, then I ran HW2. It got the main menu, then started doing funky things, going back and forth from the desktop. I CTRL+ALT+DELeted and canceled it, whereby my desktop reverted to a 640x480 resolution. Grrr, I set it back to normal, and decided that perhaps I needed to reset the computer for it to stabalise after adjusting to the new card or something. It hasn't even made it to BIOS since... This is weird coz it is a totally different computer, different monitor, and everything, yet it is a similar problem. Just that my new computer actually makes it through BIOS and Windows load. lol. I know that they are different problems, it is just ironic...

Anyway, since getting this old computer of mine working is about the only chance I have of getting these assignments done, and de-stressing with a game (though the game isn't all that important, there are many other ways to de-stress) Does anyone have any ideas to save my university enrollment? If I don't do the assignments, I will fail the units, and get kicked out of uni! But no pressure or anything... lol.

If worse comes to worse, I could contact my dad (other dad, this one is my step dad) and beg him to lend me some money to get my computer working)

The 7100GS would also be a good solution, but at those prices I would just wait.

Okay, turns out that it was just a false alarm with the old computer not working. The card just wasn't seated properely when it was transfered over :( lol. Now I have an old Sempron 3000+ to use while I save for my new PSU.

TBH I have never heard anything about that. I would look at at least the StealthXtreme 700w. But I have always trusted the GameXtreme. You might want to read some reviews on it before buying.
