No Display on the laptop screen
The LCD screen of my Compaq R3000 Laptop suddenly stopped working.
It was working fine. I installed a demo game for my son. Then the screen started displaying irregular patterns. I manually turnedoff the laptop by holding the Power button. Then after turning ON the laptop, nothing is being displayed on the screen. The screen is totally blank. I connected the laptop to the external monitor. The computer boots and it displays the irregular patterns on the monitor. Everything seems to be working ok except the display. Anyone's guidance to troubleshoot/fix this problem is highly appreciated. Please advise. |

Re: No Display on the laptop screen
I would start by letting the laptop 'rest' and cool down. Then boot up and at least see if you get the normal POST. Also, blow the dust out of the bottom of the laptop with a can of compressed air. Remove the bottom panels using a small philips screwdriver.

Re: No Display on the laptop screen
I removed the power cable and battery pack from the laptop. After about 5 hours, still I couldn't see anything on the screen.
I opened the laptop to check the LCD screen cable to the mother board. It is connected securely tight in place. Actually this all happened after I installed a demo game. Is it possible that the installation corrupted some drivers or something? |

Re: No Display on the laptop screen
I don't know for sure, but it sounds like the video card got damaged, possibly from heat. I thought overheating might have been preventing it from booting, but I don't think thats the case.
Have you tried running with one RAM stick and then the other just to see if that might be the problem? Also, have you tried booting without the hard disk?

Re: No Display on the laptop screen
I don't think it would be a driver issue. Did you try without the hard disk in?

Re: No Display on the laptop screen
I have one more laptop. I exchanged the hard drives of both the computers. This hdd worked on the other laptop. But the other working hdd didn't worked on this laptop. Now I am sure that this is not the driver issue.
The computer seems to be working ok except the display. I was able to select the user and then shut down the computer with the keyboard selections, even if there was no display. This also indicates that there is no RAM problem. My laptop is out of warranty. I will see if I can find a cheap working motherboard on ebay, or, if I can get this motherboards repaired. Else I will be on the lookout for the new laptop. Thanks alot everyone for helping me in this problem. Please reply if anyone has anymore suggestions. |

Re: No Display on the laptop screen
Usually repairing or replacing the motherboard will cost more than replacing the laptop. The hard disk is probably OK, so I would take it out and put it in an external 2.5" enclosure. Use that to rescue your data.
