Video Card Fried? Or Power Supply Too Weak?
So yesterday I came home and I smelled what I guess is the customary smell of a failed power supply; burnt popcorn.
The computer was very hot without much ventilation, but I took the case off and it cooled pretty quickly. I researched online, and decided to replace the power supply (my old power supply was 580w the new one is 580w. I plugged in the new power supply (now keep in mind I'm a first timer so its possible i missed something...) Now my video card is a ATi All In Wonder 128mb about 3 years old. It has an extra plug for the power supply, which I connected. When I turn the computer on without the video card plugged in I get 1 long beep and 2 short beeps from the BiOS, which my research tells me means a video card problem (cause its not plugged in!) When I turn the computer on with the video card plugged into the motherboard, the fan on the motherboard starts to spin for 1-2 seconds then just stops and i get no beeps or anything. So my question is.. is it a lack of power, a ruined video card, or something something not plugged in? thanks in advance. |

Re: Video Card Fried? Or Power Supply Too Weak?
This is very hard to answer because it could be either, could you post a link to the new psu? If its a very low quality just plugging in the video card could draw it down enough to make the computer do that.
I suggest you try another video card if you have one or can barrow one from a friend or the same with the psu. It should be one of the two because it was a very good sign that you got beeps with the video card removed but to pinpoint witch it is without swapping parts would only be a guess |

We actually need the specs of your computer (motherboard, CPU, etc. etc. etc.), including the name of the power supply.

Re: Video Card Fried? Or Power Supply Too Weak?
The new power supply is just something I picked up at best buy so it might not be that great.
Specifically, it's a: Antec 430w model TP3-430 100-240V~ 7A; 50hz/60hz As to the motherboard, I'm not entirely sure what it is as its over 3 years old and I don't know how to check without booting up the computer. I can tell you that its a "SK8N" and that my computer was assembled by ibuypower.com with a AMD 64 FX-51. I hope that helps in your analysis. Thank you for the speedy responses. When a PSU fries it can take out anything down with it, so it's entirely possible that the PSU took out the video card. |

Re: Video Card Fried? Or Power Supply Too Weak?
The motherboard actually tells the PSU to start. Typically wwhen a video card goes you'll get no signal to the monitor and a beep code.
Anything is possible though. I once had a system in for repair that acted like a bad PSU but turned out to be a bad optical drive. I put the drive in my test system and got the same result, no post, brief spinup on fans, then shutdown. You should follow Doby's advice and please post system specs that were requested. |
