Older System Requires Newer Video Card
Hey Everyone,
Now that I have my Vista system running well I am reworking my old system based on an 845PE MAX2 MS-6704 motherboard so that I can either play on it some XP based games that have issues with Vista and/or play across the network (I also have Ubuntu running on the this board under dual boot). At the moment I have an AGP 128MB nVidia GForce4 Ti 4200 video card on the Max2 but am finding many of the newer games I wish to play require a faster card. So as not to run into any compatibility or bottleneck issues I thought I would first ask for some suggestions on what card would work well for me. I was hoping in keeping the cost around or below $100 seeing as it is an older system but will consider all suggestions. I am looking to play games such as the Battlefield and FEAR Series, just to give you an idea. Here are some technical stats to help assist.... I am running XP Home Edition SP2 PSU - Antec SL-400w Intel Northwood P4 2400 MHz processor 1 GHz PC-2700 RAM 2 IDE hard drives 1 DVD ROM 1 DVD/RW 1 Multi Card Reader I don't really mess with over clocking, or at least have yet to. Any and all input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

Re: Older System Requires Newer Video Card
If I had the money and didn't want to change the system configuration, I would probably get the 7800GS. If I didn't want to spend that much money, I would get the 7600GS. I do mind you though, you be able to run Battlefield and FEAR at max settings. You will be able to play it though. So with your price range and AGP configuration, I suggest the 7600 series from Nvidia :)

Re: Older System Requires Newer Video Card
I was leaning the same way. Only reservation I have is one reviewer on NewEgg stated that the card does not support Ubuntu. Whether there is any truth to that i don't know.

Re: Older System Requires Newer Video Card
I think I'll go with the EVGA. If I can't get Ubuntu to work with it I'll just have to throw it on a different system. The gaming is more of a priority

Re: Older System Requires Newer Video Card
I just got the e-GeForce 7600GS AGP card and slapped it in the Max2 system. Worked great under XP and my hopes were high...
Now don't laugh (ok, laugh if you want to, I am .), but what I had planned all along was to set the system up as a dual boot Win98/XP gamer. Well after repartitioning the HD and installing 98SE I discovered there are no drivers for Win98 , guess I should have researched it better. eh?Is there a way around this. 16 color 600x800 ain't gonna cut it |

Re: Older System Requires Newer Video Card
To run older games that are unstable under XP for the most part. Some of mine but most for the kid like the kickstart series

Salright, I appreciate your input none the less. I knew it was a long shot, but with any luck hopefully someone with the answer or who is up for the challenge will come along in time. Meanwhile I have something to keep me busy now

Re: Older System Requires Newer Video Card
lol good job :P
The only thing left I can think of is try to run an emulation in Windows XP, but then again you will probably run into the same issue. Ya so go for a good old Pentium 2 system :D Haha I have an old pentium 2 with a Matrox Card sitting in my closet :P id give it to you if u lived here lol

Re: Older System Requires Newer Video Card
Uninstall the nVidia driver you've got now.
Download the 81.98 driver version and extract it inside a folder. Replace the NVAGP.inf file with the one I've attached. NVAGP.zip Reboot into VGA mode and install the driver manually - Control Panel > Add hardware > let Windows find the card > then browse to the folder you created > follow the wizard. |
