Graphics card overheating - system shutdown

A friend has installed a new graphics card and he is having the above problem. His system is:

Asus AAT??? motherboard (Nforce chipset - SLI)
AMD 4200 dual core
4x512 Kingston Hypermax memory
1 250gb SATA HDD
1 CD Writer
Brand new 600w psu (can't remember make - sorry)

Upto date ATI drivers, chipset driver and he's flashed the bios to most recent version.

Has installed a new ATI X1950 pro. The fan on it in running maximum but the pc gives an "clock freq is being lowered to cool the system" or words to that effect. Then it just shuts off.

Any ideas?

Re: Graphics card overheating - system shutdown

Hi,

When does the system say "clock freq is being lowered to cool the system"?
Is it during start-up?
Try resetting BIOS to default settings.

Re: Graphics card overheating - system shutdown

The message appears only when the graphics card is under strain. (vista performance tool, 3dmark etc).

It happens both on XP and Vista.

Is the card overclocked?
Monitor the temperatures and voltages with Speedfan.

Re: Graphics card overheating - system shutdown

He'll try that tonite. If the temps go through the roof, any idea what it could be?

The heatsink and fan are the standard ones that came with it. Straight out the box and into his system.

Re: Graphics card overheating - system shutdown

Try running the computer with the case open.
Also - get a fan blowing air into the case.
