[SOLVED] Help with Dimention 8400 and a new gfx card

hi

i just got a x1950xt gfx card and i am tryin to put it into my dell.
it fits in the slot fine but i dont know where to connect the power cable :S

if it is in the grey box at the top where my power cable connects to there is no way that the little cable they gave me will reach and i will have 2 cut the white clip the keeps the cable together to turn the box around so i can open it.

can anybody help me?

thanks

Re: Help with Dimention 8400 and a new gfx card

if you are putting that power guzzler in a dell, you can bank on needing a psu upgrade
put your specs into here and check
http://www.extreme.outervision.com/p...ulatorlite.jsp
based on a quality psu and add 30% to the end result

Re: Help with Dimention 8400 and a new gfx card

yeah i was told i might have to.

but i figured it out, i was being a total idiot looking in the wrong place lol
it seems to be fine but i havent been on it long. the machine is not hot at teh back, its acctually colder than normal tbh.

my dell is a refubished one and the psudoes look slightly different to the one on the cnet video so maybe its a new psu.

anyway if something goes wrong then i will consider a new psu.

thanks alot for your help anyway
Adam

If I were you I'd follow dai's advice. The absolute minimum PSU required for a computer with a 1950xt is 450W. The original (bad) PSU in Dimension 8400 is 350W.

Re: Help with Dimention 8400 and a new gfx card

Have a look at this: http://www.provantage.com/antec-ea500~7ANTS02V.htm
It costs a bit more than no-name PSUs - but this is quality, you won't regret it. Cheap PSUs have a bad habit of killing computers (i.e. they take other parts with them when they die).

Re: Help with Dimention 8400 and a new gfx card

ok, thats not too bad acctually but i live in the uk

is this similar enough?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/BASIQ-500-WA...2953254&sr=1-4

so a good 500w psu will be enough to power my computer and x1950xt no problem?

Re: Help with Dimention 8400 and a new gfx card

No, we don't recommend the Basiq series. Here is a UK link for the EarthWatts: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...e-21/ref=nosim.
I'm almost sure your computer will be fine with that PSU - but the online Dell manual doesn't tell what processor is inside your computer.
Try clicking the "Power supply calculator" link in my signature. Add 30% to the final calculated result.

Re: Help with Dimention 8400 and a new gfx card

ha, i just was away to say that i found it.

i did the power calculator thing and i got 455W
so if i add the 30% i get just under 600W :S

i probs did something wrong tho.

edit: i did lol. but it is 389W so that makes it just over 500W with the 30%

Re: Help with Dimention 8400 and a new gfx card

If you post the system specifications (CPU, RAM, fans, HDDs, optical drives etc) we can help you with the calculation. Are you overclocking?

Re: Help with Dimention 8400 and a new gfx card

I don't know what you put in - but I got 354 + 30% = 460 Watts .
The EarthWatts 500W will be fine.

Re: Help with Dimention 8400 and a new gfx card

I think you should take the card out.
When you get the new PSU replace the plugs you're using now with the new ones. The plug are shaped so you can't connect them to the wrong sort of socket.
Use the auxillary PCI-E plug for the video card.

Re: Help with Dimention 8400 and a new gfx card

ok

i noticed that the way that the psu you recommend is shaped, it will not fit in my case unless i cut a new hole in the casing.

is there an alternative where the socket is in the top left hand corner, or should i just modify my case?

thanks again

You can have it outside of your case if needed.

Re: Help with Dimention 8400 and a new gfx card

modify the case but make sure you don't get any metal residue on any components

Re: Help with Dimention 8400 and a new gfx card

ok, i will just cover everything with and only towel or something.

right, when my x1950xt was in my wireless card did not work, the network came up but i couldnt connect.

is this because of the psu, or is because of the new card?
i cant afford to have it not working.

i hate dell :(

Re: Help with Dimention 8400 and a new gfx card

maybe a lack of power or misconfiguration not sure, you will need to wait and see once you get the psu and the card running
