Sapphire X1650 vs. Vista install
Maybe this post should be on the mobo forum...
I have been running Vista Ultimate with no problems on a homebrew machine (ASUS P4P800SE; P4@3.2GH; 2GB DRR2; ATI Radeon 9250) for some weeks. But I wanted better graphics, so I bought a Sapphire X1650 Pro (AGP, 512M). I removed the old video drivers, plugged in the new card, and installed the previously downloaded drivers from ATI (the ones with the card are no good). On reboot, VISTA bluescreened with a message that was only up for a second or two, and then rebooted itself. So I cleaned off and formatted a spare HD, and tried to install VISTA from scratch. It got as far as the final section "Completing Install", and then blew again. I managed to catch the first line or two - something about "...a recent hardware change". Put in another HD with XP on it, and it ran with no problem. Took it to a friend who also runs VISTA (but with a different mobo), and it (the Sapphire card) ran perfectly. So at this point, I am beginning to conclude that the combination of VISTA and my ASUS P4P800SE combine to make an unacceptable environment for the Sapphire card. Can anyone offer any suggestions? |
