Is my current PSU beefy enough to run an 8800 GTX?
The PSU I currently have is here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817103940
Come Christmas I want to buy a GeForce 8800 GTX, but I want to know beforehand if my current PSU is powerful enough for it. The rest of my computer specs are in my sig, and nothing else will change besides the video card. |

Personally i think you should look to the minimum of 650W + and try and get as many amps as you can on those rails

I kind of agree with blackduck30. Lately bigger is better for the powersupply.
If nothing else, you could add this to your system if you have room: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817153037 I've been running one for about a year now with a 550W ps. |

My personal opinion is that you need to heed the advice of Blackduck30. The "stopgap" instant solution of just adding another source is not in your best interest. My advice is that you need to just "do it right" and don't try to patch things up until your next issue or it will end up costing more in the long run. That is my two cents worth.

Re: Is my current PSU beefy enough to run an 8800 GTX?
My biggest issue is money. I anticipate having just enough this Christmas for the new card and maybe the auxiliary PSU if I budget for it correctly. If I'm going to need to upgrade the entire PSU, I'd have to do it some earlier month, and I don't know when I'll have those kind of funds.

Re: Is my current PSU beefy enough to run an 8800 GTX?
I do agree with both Tumbleweed36 and blackduck30. If you have the means it is definately the way to go. When I put my system together people were just finding out that 550-650watt powersupplies weren't good enough. There weren't a lot of big one on the market and they were really expensive. That thermaltake ps was a great buy for when I got it, and it works great.
