Arrow Anyone with a 8800 and Vista plz answer this thread

Hi, im going to buy a 8800GT 640mb PCI-E i want to know with the latest forceware drivers is there an option in the Nvidia control panel to access "Advanced Timings" or "Custom Resolutions".. I require a resolution of 1280x720p. Ive tried PowerStrip on my 7900GT and it works with the desktop but i carnt get the resolution to appear in the game options.. Like Oblivion or BF2.
I have tried the BF2's custom resolution steps where you type in a command line in the "target" line of the shortcut but the game crashes at statup. So does Oblivion when you edit the Render file.
So ppl with 8800 and Vista can you plz answer this thread.
Thanks

Hi

I am pretty sure that it will come with that resolution already supported. Even my integrated graphics supports that resolution, so I don't think you need to worry about it.

Re: Anyone with a 8800 and Vista plz answer this thread

Yeah it somes with the supported res but most games dont. you cant set the res settings using the nvidia control panels "Advanced Timings". This overrides any current set resolution set on a game. Thats why i would like to know if the Nvidia control panel has that option for the 8800 because it has not been implemented on the 7 series yet.

I can't say for sure. Sorry. I will see if any of the other team members know.

What games are you playing? Many have support for custom resolutions. On my laptop with the WXGA (1280 x 800) screen, all my games support this resolution. Which games don't support it?

Re: Anyone with a 8800 and Vista plz answer this thread

Atm all games dont, the only resolutions that are in any games option is 800x600 and 1024x768 if i force a res of 1280x720 the games will crash.
The games i mainly play are BF2 and Oblivion. I know how to apply custom resolutions to both but the method no longer works...
I dont understand why it doesnt work because when i had XP it worked fine and. But i used Advanced timings and created a res of 1280x720 and it placed the res in the windows display properties. Now i carnt do that because of the current Vista drivers for the 7 series....
Which brings me back to my first post..

Re: Anyone with a 8800 and Vista plz answer this thread

Well nvidia started developing the Drivers and the nV panel for the 8 series long before they started for the 7 series.. Thats why you could enable Sli for 8 and not 7,6..
Kalim is there an option in the Nvidia cotrol panel that says "Custom Timings"

Re: Anyone with a 8800 and Vista plz answer this thread

I don't use Vista anymore for the SLI setup TBH, still too many problems like no AA. So since the last 3 months I've installed and uninstalled the G80GTXs and the drivers many times in 32-bit and 64-bit Vista. The last time I checked was with ForceWare 158.18 in Vista Ultimate 32-bit at work.

The options for "Advanced Timings" and "Custom Resolutions" i.e. adding them, under "Display Properties" was not supported under Vista I'm afraid.

However I can run SLI using overscan/underscan and detect the 720p/1080i/1080p modes I require, which are not similar to the ones you're after.

Re: Anyone with a 8800 and Vista plz answer this thread

The latest nTune seems to add options that are not (and will not) be added to the control panel http://www.nvidia.com/object/ntune_5.05.38.00.html

Can't check it coz I am overseas still, but it might be of help?

Re: Anyone with a 8800 and Vista plz answer this thread

Yes, they fixed quite a few issues- the main point of that was because nV G80GTX ran bad in early DX10 benches featured in R600 reviews, so nV patched it all up quickly to offer reviewers the driver and released that to make it run good. It certainly improved the performance by a lot.

It's releasing officially later this week, rather than BETA.

Re: Anyone with a 8800 and Vista plz answer this thread

I have a major issue with any driver above 100.64. If i install any other drivers above, my 26" HDTV (DVI-DVI) is no longer detected in any display scans. The TV is my default display. If i connect the TV using component cable (Red, Blue, Green) and scan for displays (Nv Panel) it will detect my display but places "Disconnected" next to it.
So im hoping if i get a 8800 this will fix the issue, its a very expensive issue i know but if it works that will be great.
Kalim. There is no current underscan/overscan for series 7 yet. Neither is there a HD display of 720p. There is 480p and 576p. But you said theres underscan/overscan for the 8800. That might do, its basically customizing a resolution

Dai the link you gave me is only for the 8800. I currently have 2x 7900GTO's. But hopefully buy the end of this week i will have this one http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....1129&rd=1&rd=1

Im having a really hard time finding a PSU with a +12v28A any one know of a PSU like that.....
Also have i missread the article. Does your whole PSU have to be able to have an output of 28A in total, not just one of the 12V lines

Aus_Karlos: Only PSU I've seen with those specs before is a Thermaltake Purepower 680W (W0049 IIRC the newer revision) ??

If it is, that's quite enough for that future rig, yes.

The +12V rails add together to make up the total wattage available on the +12V.

Yes, you do have underscan/overscan for HDTVs for the 8 series, albeit very limited. It allows close enough modes. I would expect the 7 series to allow the compensated 720p mode too as mentioned.

But the modes are not what you were after like I stated, although similar. I've picked out some issues from driver release notes for you that you should consider before any purchase.

Overscan/Underscan Support
Quote:
The ability to display the entire desktop on a TV is not supported—the desktop will be masked instead.
NVIDIA has not implemented full underscan compensation control in the drivers yet. However, end users can access 8% underscan compensation from the Windows Vista Display Properies Control Panel on an HDTV as follows:
1 Open the Windows Control Panel, click Classic View, then double‐click Personalization
2 Click Display Settings, then click Advanced Settings.
3 Click the Monitor Tab.
4 Clear (uncheck) the Hide modes that this monitor cannot display checkbox, then click OK.
Once this is done, HDTV users will now see up to two new ʺunderscannedʺ modes on the Windows Display Settings Control Panel, depending on their HDTV–1176x656 for 720p modes and 1768x992 for 1080i/1080p modes.
Quote:
To switch between the interlaced and progressive modes for 1768x992,
1 Click Advanced Settings, then click the Adapter Tab.
2 Click List all modes, then locate the modes that are appended with ʺinterlacedʺ or ʺprogressiveʺ and click the appropriate mode.
3 Click OK, then click OK or Apply.

General Antialiasing Problem with Top Games
Quote:
We have found that some games running under Windows Vista enable 16x coverage sampling antialiasing (CSAA) when 4xAA is selected in the game menu, resulting in deflated performance on GeForce 8800 cards. The problem occurs with NVIDIA Vista drivers 100.54 and later. The same effect will occur in future ʺRelease 100ʺ Windows XP drivers.
Affected applications found to date include:
• Battlefield 2
• Battlefield 2142
• Sin Episodes
• Half‐Life 2
• Half‐Life 2 Lost Coast
To set standard 4xAA in these applications, please set 4xAA in the game, and also enable “Enhance the application” antialiasing mode with a 4x antialiasing setting in the NVIDIA graphics driver control panel. We are working with developers to implement better in‐game CSAA support. You can see CSAA menu selections in Half‐Life 2: Episode One and Supreme Commander.

Re: Anyone with a 8800 and Vista plz answer this thread

The Thermaltake Purepower 680W is my PSU sorry forgot to put teh name of my PSU down..
So you say the 8800 will run fine even though my 12v rail is at 24A. Is it because it takes extra power from the two 6-pins on the card.. So as long as the card gets a minimum of 28A from anywhere it will run perfect.

Edit: Thats a lot of bugs Nvidia has to sort out. Give them a few months and they will find more than they can fix

There are many many more bugs- those are just a few of the ones for single 8800 and Vista 32-bit. SLI and Vista 64-bit have the most errors that need fixing and it's 6 months since release.

A 8800GTX pulls a maximum of 165W known under maximal stress. In casual gaming use you won't get more than 145W. 75W (+12V up to 5.5A and +3.3V up to 3A) from the PCIe slots through the motherboard. 75W through the PCIe connectors (6.25A of +12V) = 150W

Altogether a maximum of 66 + 75 = 141W aka 11.75A on the +12V

Your PSU has one +12V rail @ 14A = 168W
The second +12V rail @ 23A = 276W
And the third +12V rail @ 15A = 180W

Any of those rails alone is more than enough for your card and spare.
