More dadburn ati problems
Hello
Got ati 9800xt. In my ati tray tools the gpu temp reads 53c and in my display properties under overdrive tab it reads 73c. Which one is more than likely closer to the right temp.? thanks harley |

Appreciate your reply. Are you talking about one of those deals that you plug into PCI slot with two fans? Thats what i was going to try but can not get the dadburn ati 9800xt card out of my computer (the 4 wire power connector will not come off). Does one of those have to be plugged in right under the video card? Thanks again harley PS: The computer shop down the road (50miles) wants 200.00 to take the card out and clean it. So if i am going to do anything this old man will have to do himself. |

Re: More dadburn ati problems
Hi Harley, is your GPU passive or actively cooled? Are you overclocking this little baby? As you cannot tell for sure the temp, and the fact that 73oC in my opinion is way too high, I would remove any overclocks and either add (if passive) or upgrade your GPU cooler. Check for dust as well!

Thanks for your reply. I purchased the parts and had a fellow put this computer together , it is not overclocked (would be if i had any idea how to do it). I did notice that the tape holding that little probe thing to the side of the heatsink is just about to come off (looks like it has dried up). what kind of tape can i use to replace? As for Gpu active or passive cooling , shoot i dont know , its just like it was when it came out of box. Its got a fan on bottom of card (ati radeon 9800xt) I know it needs the dust cleand out of the fan , but can not get the dadburn power connecter uplugged from the card so i can take it out. if i ever get the card out can the fan be replaced or do i have to buy another card? thanks again harley |

Re: More dadburn ati problems
I'm talking about one of these, this one is a bit pricy, but i recall a decent one for around 10-12 dollars.
It just sits in an unused PCI slot, blowing air out the grill. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835110015

Sure do appreciate all your help. Iwas looking at the fan deal on the site you sent me and it looks like it will be hard for a pc dummbie like myself to install , it took me two years before i figured out where to hook up my two front case fans (theres a lot of parts that come with that thing). I was looking at a site (below) at a vga cooler called Zalman VF900 LED . Would it be easier to install then the pci deal? thanks again harley http://sharkacomputers.com/vga.html |

Re: More dadburn ati problems
The PCI one (the one i sent you a link for) is probably the easiest thing you will ever do with your computer, put it in, screw it, plug it to an empty power cord, and bam. It may make some extra noise but it is the simplest solution to overheating.

Re: More dadburn ati problems
Yes that is a power cable, also known as ATX cables. If you don't have an empty one, don't remove anything that leads to an important unit (IE: CD drive, HDD) Although you should have an empty slot
By the way- Welcome to the forums, if I never welcomed you yet

Re: More dadburn ati problems

sorry it took so long to ask you these questions , i had a triple by pass and and have a little health trouble here latly. I ordered that pci fan deal you suggested . ok i have 1 agp slot and five pci slots under it , i have my video card in the agp slot and my sound card in the second pci slot , do i have to move my sound card down a slot in order for pci fan to fit (or maybe two slots)? Do i have to uninstall driver and software for my ati video card and my sb soundcard before i take them out of pci slots? harley PS: I took my computer to a repair shop and they told me it would cost 65.00 to get the power connector unplugged so i can get the card out(9800xt) , shoot i would rather cut it (power connector) off than pay that much , well anyway it looks like the wires are long enough to pull the video card out far enough to clean the fan on it , what you think? |

Re: More dadburn ati problems
should be, dont break anything trying. You dont need to uninstall any drivers if you just move it down slots (or one slot).
good luck with your computer, as well as your recovery from surgery.

Re: More dadburn ati problems
Hi mate sorry for the delay, was in Australia.
I don't think you need to go buying more stuff straight away. If your card is dusty then that will definately require cleaning. That will probably do the trick, just be firm with the power connector making sure you disconnect the mains power first, and discharge any static electricity in your body by touching the chasis before anything else. Then just be firm with the card power connector. Once you have removed the power connector there should be a little clip holding the card into the PCI slot. Remove the retaining screw first, then while holding the clip open, firmly remove the card with even pressure. Then get yourself a can of compressed air (from the local pc or hardware shop) and give card (and the rest of the PC, ie CPU fan etc) a good clean out. I think that is all that is needed if the card is actually running at 53oC. As you have two anomalous readings you cannot be sure which one is correct. The 70oC reading is getting too high. Clean the card and then post your temperatures again, one during idle, and one after gaming. I think you will find that cleaning your card fan, pc case and making sure airflows are good will save you the extra bucks. Good luck with that and your health.
