8800 Vs 8600
Hi ive notice a lot of specs have changed on these two GPU's and i need some help understanding them before i buy one...
8800 Specs ASUS GeForce™ 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 PCI Express™ x16 Memory 768MB GDDR3 Memory Interface 384-bit Graphics Core 256-bit Core Clock 575MHz Memory Clock 1800MHz Shader Clock 1350MHz RAMDAC Dual 400MHz Connectors: Two Dual-Link DVI, HDTV DirectX 10 Compliant HDCP Compliant (HD-DVD and Blu-Ray ready) A massive 681 million transistors GPU 128 Stream Processors SLI Multi-GPU Ready Price on Ebay $800AUD 8600 Specs Memory Clock 1.6 GHz Dual Link DVI - Supporting digital output up to 2560x1600 Dual Clock rate 620 MHz Chipset GeForce 8600 GT Memory 256 MB Bus Type PCI-E Memory Type DDR3 Memory Bus 128 bit Highlighted Features Dual DVI Out , HDTV ready , RoHS , TV Out , SLI ready Memory Interface 128 bit Fill Rate 8.64 billion/sec Memory Bandwidth 22.4 GB/Sec Chipset GeForce™ 8600 GT RAMDACs 400 MHz Stream Processors 32 Shader Clock 1190 MHz Price on Ebay $360AUD Fisrt thing i need to know is the Memory Interface the 8800 is at 384bit and the 8600 is at 128bit. How much of a differnce in performance will this make if any? And the stream processor what is that? Also the 8600 has a higher core clock rate and a memory clock.. how will this impact on performance... I can affored both cards atm but i want either the 8800 in SLI or the 8600 in SLi.. 8600 looks like a cheap alternative but will the performance be close to have two 8800's... Thanks |

Re: 8800 Vs 8600
From what I've read the 8600GT is severely lacking in performance. It would actually be better to get a cheaper and better performing 7900GS. The 8600GTS is the one you would be looking at for that price range.
As for SLI, it seems to be more trouble than its worth as the 8800GTX should perform as well without the driver hassles from SLI mode |
