better off software modding, less risk involved.

Re: XFX 5900XT Question

Softmods, in 99% of cases, are just as good as hardware mods but a million times more safe. I've softmodded ATi and nVidia chips plenty of times and gotten the same results as people who tore their hair out trying to hardmod.

Re: XFX 5900XT Question

Sorry maybe 1 more question if i may.
When i use Rivatuner to software mod to a FX5950 Ultra , would the card turn into a FX5950 Ultra with 128mb mem ? I suppose what i am asking is would it still perform like a overclocked FX5900XT (475/950) but in FX5950 Ultra clothing ? Is a FX5900XT @475/950 the same performer as a FX5950 Ultra 128mb @475/950 ?

Re: XFX 5900XT Question

XT's are lower end cards when it comes to nVidia. ATi is just the opposite where an XT is more high-end. With overclocking (NOT recommended) and softmods you can bring it to the performance of a FX5950 series card.

FX 5900 specs

Powered by NVidia GeForce™ FX 5900 GPU
Memory configuration: 128mb DDR
CineFX™ 2.0 engine
Intellisample™ High-Resolution Compression Technology (HCT)
High-Precision Graphics
UltraShadow™ Technology
nView™ Multi-Display Technology
AGP 8X -2.1GB/s bandwidth to system
NVidia® Unified Driver Architecture (UDA)
Microsoft® Video Mixing Renderer (VMR)
Digital Vibrance Control (DVC) 3.0
256-Bit Memory Interface with advanced memory control
Microsoft® DirectX® 9.0 and OpenGL 1.4 Optimizations and Support
400MHz RAMDACs support 2048x1536 resolution at 75Hz
8 Pixels/Clock Rendering Pipeline
Highest DVI output up to 1600x1200
Integrated NTSC/PAL TV encoder up to 1024x768 resolution
Integrated full hardware MPEG-2 decoder
New 64-phase Video Scaler
0.13 Micron Process Technology
Architected for Cg

FX 5950 Ultra specs

Graphics Core 256-bit
Memory Interface* 128-bit
Memory Bandwidth* 30.4GB/sec.
Fill Rate 3.8 billion texels/sec.
Vertices per Second 356 million
Memory Data Rate 950 MHz
Pixels per Clock (peak) 8
Textures per Pixel** 16*
Dual RAMDACs 400 MHz
*Maximum in a single rendering pass

The only REAL difference is clock speed from what I've read. This site has a table that does a nice job comparing the two cards and the competing (at that time) Radeon 9800 XT. The Radeons were awesome for that time because they had better implementation of DirectX 9.0 instructions.
