ATI 9800Pro, total system freeze with games

Hi, newbie to the forum, here.

I've been playing Jedi Academy and attempting to play Jade Empire, but start a couple of weeks ago with Jedi, the system would freeze solid. The sound went into a loop after a few seconds and the screen remained static. I could not alt-tab or ctrl-alt-del out of it. I had to reboot, every time. The freezing initially happened after a period of playing (say, an hour), but got shorter and shorter and is now at the point where Jedi freezes just after boot up.

Thinking that I had a bad copy of Jedi, I installed Jade Empire and encountered exactly the same problem. It seems to freeze even before it loads all the way, although I once, out of a half-dozen times, managed to see a load screen for the software company.

I have the most recent drivers installed (7-4_xp_dd_44981.exe). DirectX 9c is installed. I'm on a WinXP system. I have plenty of hardware to run these games (Athlon 1.7Ghz, 1gig RAM). The only common factor I can think of is that both games require 3D graphics.

Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, and welcome!

Try running the game with only one RAM stick. Do this with each RAM stick you have. See if it only does this with one stick. It could be a bad RAM stick.

Also, please download SpeedFan from my sig and post the temperatures and voltages durring or right after gaming. You can't have low voltages or high temperatures.

Re: ATI 9800Pro, total system freeze with games

I'll do the RAM chip swap later today, but as useful as SpeedFan looks, I won't be able to post temperatures during or after gaming because gaming crashes the whole computer. The best I can do is report temperatures after the computer reboots. That said, SpeedFan is running right now and it's reporting 127C on one of my temps. I'm going to check my manual see which one it is (it just says Temp2), but that can't be good, eh?

That sounds like an error. Any IC will fry after 120 degrees. Check the temps and voltages in the BIOS, it will be much more accurate.
