x1600 with kv8 pro

hi,

after installing gfx drivers the system hangs after the "windows xp loading" screen.

card is an x1600 on a kv8 pro.

i can install gfx drivers when the agp driver in the via 4in1 chipset is NOT installed, but i get about 20-30% performance, (compared to once when windows successfully loaded with gfx drivers).

i have tried catalyst 6.9, 7.2 and the ones on the disc. pc hangs after xp loading screen.
ive tried latest omega drivers also, thankfully it does not hang but seems to forget the drivers are there.

i have tried the 4in1 chipset on the motherboard disc, v4.56 and v5.10a.

i have tried with windows sp1 and sp2 (sp2 installs via drivers or something).

i have updated my bios.

kv8 pro
a64 3000+
1GB
x1600pro
seagate sata 250GB
wd 80gb
500w

im pretty much out of hope here, but any help is appreciated.

Re: x1600 with kv8 pro

yeah i always remove the drivers. ive used a cleaning utility sometimes, but mostly started from scratch (format). Ive done that 8 or 9 times now.

it actually rarely goes into safe mode (and doesnt me the option). after installing catalyst drivers the system will hang on first reboot, then on second boot go into windows with very low graphics (4 bit and 640x480) that cant be changed.
usually it will do this, but not always. When booting with catalyst drivers installed, it usually just hangs straight after the xp loading screen.

Re: x1600 with kv8 pro

i have tried with and without the mother board drivers (it is specifically the agp driver that creates a conflict).

the video drivers install and function when motherboard drivers (specifically the agp driver) are not installed, but with very low performance.

tried many different versions as well... add v5.11 to the above list.

i have tried with and without control center installed.

Re: x1600 with kv8 pro

install the via agp driver there used to be a problem if you chose turbo mode
instead of the standard install

Re: x1600 with kv8 pro

yeah i always installed that way.

a quick update on the agp driver... driver detector picked up the "via cpu to agp" driver was out of date. this is supposed to be the same driver/device im having problems with.

the driver was signed by microsoft so im not sure what happened. i updated and it now appears as a "via cpu to agp 2.0/3.0" device, and is signed by ati (or was it via).

however this hasnt helped anything.

also, what is the deal with the voltage? it is supposed to be a 0.8v card but i cant set it below 1.5. i also had problems when the voltage was up at 1.7, causing overlapping colours etc and causing restarts. this dropping the voltage to minimum this has stopped.

Re: x1600 with kv8 pro

the kv8 pro uses the uguru utility that allows overclocking (changing freqencies, voltage, temp monitoring) in real-time through windows.

uguru also has its own section in the bios.

the minimum i can set the agp voltage is 1.5v.

there is an auto setting in the bios but with that on it just sits at 1.7v. by dropping it down to 1.5 ive actually eliminated a few problems.

Re: x1600 with kv8 pro

see if there is a bios update to cover it,according to the manual it should be able to set 0.8v

Re: x1600 with kv8 pro

geeez you did some research for me. thanks :P

but yeah, that's what im thinking. ill research what bios and uguru is the absolute latest.

i updated the bios originally with flashmenu which only works when you are using the latest version of flashmenu (v1.503), so i naturally assumed it would put in the latest bios. could be wrong on both accounts.

the strange thing is the latest uguru (v3.035) installs an old version of flashmenu (v1.38 or something) which doesnt work because it's an old version, yet the uguru oc utility (that runs in windows) wouldnt take any voltage or frequency readings... which i assumed was because it was designed for a newer bios, one that could give 0.8v.

ill double-check the bios version that flashmenu installed.

btw my x1600 is actually running as a pci card atm. good times.

Re: x1600 with kv8 pro

nope. bios version is the latest 2.5.

im now also seeing conflicting reports on whether or not the agp port can take a 0.8v card.

2 articles now have said 1.5v only, but they were notably older articles than the ones that claim 0.8v will work.
