Vid. Card Problem I Think

Hello,

Sorry if i'm not correct about some stuff, i'm not much of a computer type person.

Well, I play alot of FPS games, DoD,CS,CS:S ext... Long time ago I played non-stop and was getting fine 100fps in all of those games. Now when I come back to play, I notice that im only getting 5-15 fps in semi-basic maps, on medium to low settings. So I just thought I need to update my drivers. I'm running a GIGABYTE RADEON 9600 PRO 128 mem. I go to the ATi site, download the latest drivers, and reboot. Load up my game and the same thing is happening.

I think it has to do with my video card becuase when I try and run movies, its really choppy.

Specs:

Motherboard – ABIT AS8-V Socket T

CPU – Intel. Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz

RAM – WINTEC 512mb 184-pin DDR SDRAM

Video Card(s) – GIGABYTE RADEON 9600 PRO 128 mem

Hard Drive(s) – Magnetic Data Technologies -128.0 GB 7200 RPM ATA 100/8MB BUF

Operating System - Windows Proffesional 2000

Any information on what I should do would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Vid. Card Problem I Think

Hi,

It sounds like a driver issue. If this started happening recently, then do a system restore to before it was happening. If not, then download the Catalyst 7.1 drivers from ATI and make sure you install them in safe mode. Otherwise, Windows will install a generic driver over it.

Also, make sure your hardware acceleration is set to full.
Display Properties > Settings tab > Advanced... > Troubleshoot tab.

Re: Vid. Card Problem I Think

Could it be overheating? Clogged fans/heatsinks? If you've never cleaned the inside of your computer it's time to do it now. Remove all the dust with canned, compressed air.

Re: Vid. Card Problem I Think

Thanks alot for the quick posts guys, Turns out eneles was right. I cleaned everything out for a air can, then booted up and ran my game and it was better but not as it was before, so I opened that case and opened a window to get some air in my room, and it now runs really nice and smooth.

Thanks alot guys

Re: Vid. Card Problem I Think

Glad it is working. BTW, you can use ATI Tray Tools from my sig to monitor temps. Make sure they don't exceed 70 degrees (c).

Re: RESOLVED Vid. Card Problem I Think

Download ATi Tray Tools as was suggested earlier, and let us know what your video card temp is.

Re: RESOLVED Vid. Card Problem I Think

For a 9600, 76C is too high. Is that temp readout from your PC sitting idle, or did you look at the temperature right when you dropped to desktop after playing a game for an extended period of time?

Re: RESOLVED Vid. Card Problem I Think

Hi,

Even for load load temps, that is still too high. I suggest you get one of these and put it under your 9600 to help control heat.

Was that the CPU temp, or the temp reading from ATI Tray Tools?

How many fans do you have? You should have an intake fan at the front bottom, and an exhaust fan at the rear top.

Re: Vid. Card Problem I Think

I'm not sure how to get the temp. reading from ATi Tray Tools.

I'm not too good with computers but I think I have 1 fan in the back, and thats all.

Thanks,

Ryan

Re: Vid. Card Problem I Think

First lets lower the CPU temp. What program did you use to get it?

Chances are that is a Prescott P4, which is a hot CPU. You should redo the application of thermal paste on the CPU and see if that helps. But you will likely need a third party heatsink. Take a look at this:

I used SpeedFan to get the reading from the cpu.

Thanks for the Reply,

Re: Vid. Card Problem I Think

dai has just given you a link to instructions for Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste, which you should put between the CPU (IHS) and heatsink. That will lower temps, but you should look into the heatsink I posted.

Re: Vid. Card Problem I Think

Ok,

Sorry about the delay, everything was gonig good for a little.

I started a game yesterday and everything was fine, never got any bad fps. The average CPU temp. was about 70-75. I rebooted this morning and started SpeedFan, and the tempature is still around 70-75. I load up a game, and join a server and I'm getting fine 50-70 fps, which is awesome for me, but then just randomly it will drop down to 10-20 on no spicific part of the map, just randomly, then it will spike back up to 50-70.

I have no idea whats going on.

Re: Vid. Card Problem I Think

It could be CPU throttling due to high temps. You need to lower the temps; running the CPU at temperatures that high puts it at risk for heat damage.

Re: Vid. Card Problem I Think

Not sure if I should post this here but, i'm not sure what to do.

This morning I try to start my computer and it goes for about 8 seconds and shuts off. so I try again and samething. I tried running into safe mode, but before I could select safe mode, it shuts off.

I'm not much of a computer person so I dont want to mess with anything.

Thanks again,

Ryan.
