RESOLVED Radeon 9700 Pro Problems

I have a Radeon 9700 Pro which I purchased in early 2004, and now the screen is all messed up. I don't know how to describe how it looks, but it's kinda like Matrix code running down the screen but smaller dots. Sometimes it flickers, sometimes there are 4 columns of about 1 inch thick spread across the screen. It's barely ledgible. Sometimes the right half of the screen works, but not the left half.

It's my video card right? I tried my monitor on another computer and it had no problems.

I ordered a GeForce 7600 GS 512K video card and won't use ATI anymore which I hope will be good enough for C&C3 on a Pent 4 2.8.

Re: Radeon 9700 Pro Problems

Hi,

Actually, it could be one of several things. What I would do if this were mine. Go to Start, Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager....scroll down to the Video Adapter area and open it by clicking on the little + sign. Then, right click on each of the items (if more than one) under that heading and select UNINSTALL under that heading. Run the driver cleaner under my signature area. Next, shut down, and reboot. When it comes back up, it will find your card. Reinstall the drivers and see if that helps.

Might be a good idea also to make sure the fan on the video card is working properly and that ALL dust bunnies are out of that fan. Good idea while you have the side off to dust out all the fans and heatsinks.

Post back with questions/concerns.

Hi,

Download SpeedFan from my sig and post all the voltages. Next, download ATI Tray Tools and post the temperatures it reads.

Also, please post all your system specs using this thread as a guide.

Re: Radeon 9700 Pro Problems

I tried that and same problem. But when I do uninstall the driver it lets me see the right half of the screen clearly at the setting of 1024x768. That helped. But now the left half?

Re: Radeon 9700 Pro Problems

Hi,
Start the computer in safe mode. If the monitor looks OK in safe mode, I would say the error most likely lies within the graphics drivers. Otherwise my guess is the graphics card itself.

Re: Radeon 9700 Pro Problems

What key do you press for safe mode? My screen is all blured so I don't know which is the safe mode button when the computer is loading up. For example, when I go into BIOS I can't see any of the functions hardly because the screen is all blurred.

Re: Radeon 9700 Pro Problems

Press and hold F8 right after the computer POSTs. Then select Safe Mode.

We will need to know the voltages and temperatures. Also, please post your system specs using this thread: http://www.techsupportforum.com/hard...tem-specs.html

Re: Radeon 9700 Pro Problems

Well I tried safe mode and it looks just as bad, so it must mean the graphics card is fried.

Say goodbye to ATI Radeon 9700 Pro and say hello to NVidea Geforce 7600 GS 512 AGP which is about 75% faster I think. Just guessing.

Re: Radeon 9700 Pro Problems

It might have been just overheating, though it looks like bad video memory would have been a more likely cause since it was doing it in 2D.

Re: Radeon 9700 Pro Problems

I think we are almost sure it's the card (it's impossible to be 100% sure). In your first post you mention that you have ordered a GeForce 7600GS - please post back and let us know how things are getting on.
