video card overheating drastically
Hello all,
I'm new the this forum, and rather new in general to the advanced inner workings of a comp. I have an ATI Radeon X800 XT Platinum, the AGP one (as my mobo doesn't support PCI-Xpress). While not under heavy load (ie. not in games) my GPU and CPU temps are fine (GPU ~ 50 and CPU ~30) When my GPU is under load, the temp jumps dramatically, while the CPU only goes up to ~40. I've seen it hit 80, and recently up to 100 degrees!! After I've alt-tabbed out of the application for a bit, the temp cools back down. This, as can be expected, causes many random freezes and crashes. Some games this happens more than others, seemingly independent of complexity of the graphics (it happens much more frequently in WoW than Oblivion). This card is about a year old now, and this is a new problem and progressively getting worse. I have recently also seen a decline in game performance. I have made sure the card is devoid of dust, and have actually taken the side off the case to make sure it's getting plenty of air. Recently I even added an actual fan blowing straight into the side of the case, but this is beginning not to help much anymore. Am I doomed to getting a new card? (I would have to slightly downgrade as it seems ATI has stopped making this card in AGP format). Oh, I also forgot to mention that Sapphire is the actual manufacturer of the card. Thanks for any help, and sorry for the long post! |

You can always look at putting an aftermarket cooler on it such as the Zalman VF-700 or VF-900 along with some AS5. Also consider upgrading your case fans to move more hot air out of your case

Thanks
Thanks for the help, I'll try replacing the stock fan with a better one. It's slowing dying anyway I think. It's starting to make grinding noises. I thought that opening up the case and constantly blowing air over it with a fan would compensate, but it looks like I was wrong.

You try under clocking your graphics card, that may help it for now until you get a new fan, also a pci fan under the card may help a little, just to help keep the airflow circulated.
