Geforce 6800xt wont be recognized
hi ive got an old-ish dell dimension 4550 desktop with an intel pentium 4 processor, 512 mb ram, running windows xp. i just bought a geforce 6800xt video card to help out with some games and when i put it in and start up the computer, everything starts except the video card. (ive got a 450watt psu too so i found that wierd since ive got enough power). anyways, the monitor light stays orange and i get no display when i turn on the computer, but everything else is definetly running. i was wondering if this sounds like a compatibility issue or maybe the card was dead on arrival or maybe something else...please help!

Hi,
Did you remember (before you put your new card in) to go in to the device manager and disable your old card and any other things like extra drivers? If not, start over by taking the new card out...... get your old card working..... then right click that area in the device manager......disable the old card (delete the new card if it is in there)...... shut down.,,...put the new card back in.....Boot back up and let it find the new card.....put in your new drivers....alas, it should work.

Hi,
Just double checking...did you disable the original video card(s) if listed twice and delete everything else in the device manager area for the display adapters? Are you replacing an onboard card or what is the other video card you are replacing this one with? Do you know the brand name of your power supply?

Hi,
Well, here may be your answer. You may not even like the answer that I am going to give you. The power supply you have is a very low quality and weak power supply that costs $19.99. A good 450 watt power supply will cost you at least $60.00 or even more. The power supply you have has a +12V rail that puts out a very maximum of 15 amps. That is with a very low efficiency of this power supply of 70%. Therefore, it is too weak to pull that card. The manufacturer of the card you have recommends a very minimum of 18 amps on the +12V rail. Therefore, the power supply can not pull this video card and with the very low efficiency of your power supply, that makes it even worse. That is my opinion from researching the card and your power supply.

damn i just got that power supply to make the card work. guess i shouldve researched more...thats what i get i guess =/. oh yea, i took out a dell 250w power supply which came with the comp. im guessing thats just too little wattage, since dell isnt that cheap of a company...or would that work with it probably? cause if so then id know that its not the psu thats the problem. anyways, thanks for all the help. im gonna look into a different power supply. thanks!

Hi,
I doubt if it would work with the dell 250. Dell just puts the very basic power supply in their machines and if you upgrade, they just won't be large enough to pull the rig. That is my opinion. Go someplace like Bestbuy and buy a more powerful one that is a brand name and try it. If it doesn't solve the problem, take it back for a small restocking charge. That way it won't cost much to see if that is the total problem.
