I recently got a new graphics card as I decided it was time to get rid of GeForce 2 MX. My new card however has given me a few tricky problems. I installed the drivers that came with the card and I installed the 93.71 ForceWare's as this forum suggested. No problems so far. Then I decided I wanted to watch a few video clips. I start up Media Player Classic and open the video file. CPU Usage bumps to 100% and my computer completely freezes up. I end the process after 10 minutes of battling my way to the Task Monitor. Thought it was just a random problem and decided to give BSPlayer a go with a different video clip. Same thing happens.

After searching a few forums and whatnot, I hear that the 90 series drivers don't exactly go together well with videos. I feel scammed. Is there anything I can do to help my situation?

Here are my system specs:

* Power Supply – FSP Fortron(?) FSP 300-60ATV, 300 watts

* Motherboard – ASUSTeK Computer INC. A7N8X-VM

* CPU – AMD Athlon XP 2000+ CPU1 1,6 Ghz

* RAM – 1x Kingston 256 Mt DDR, 1x Kingston 512 Mt DDR

* Video Card – ASUS NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS 256Mt AGP

* Operating System - Windows XP Pro

i would look for a new PSU. 300W is pretty low and that could be your problem.

Did you uninstall the old drivers and install the new in VGA mode?

Thanks and yes, I did install them in VGA mode.

When I tried(I tried to install them before), they say "Couldn't find a card supporting these drivers" or something like that. There are a few threads with the same video card about this problem.

Okay.. This is what my PSU label tells:

+3.3V = 28.0A
+5V = 30.0A
+12V = 15.0A

God I hope I don't have to buy a new PSU..

E: Okay, the test tells me I need 'bout 224W's. I'm fairly sure I filled it out right.

I'm pretty sure this whole thing is about the drivers because everything else works just great. Games and all. Lots of people have had the same issues(not being able to play back videos with 90-series drivers).

The 7600GS needs at least 20A on the 12V line.

Have you connected the 4-pin molex from the PSU to the card?

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the Forceware drivers and any Nvidia entries. Reboot into VGA mode, disable antivirus, install Forceware 84.21 and reboot.

Try the K-Lite codec pack.

Yup. The card shouldn't work at all if I don't have enough on the 12V line, right?

I CAN'T do that. As said, I tried to do it in VGA mode but it just kept giving this error after it had extracted the files that the installer didn't find an appropriate card for the drivers(Can't remember the exact error, I'll try and find it).

there is only a small difference between the 2 cards as far as power goes neither pull much power
you will not get anywhere until you increase the amps on the 12v line the psu you have goes back to the win98 era

It's not a matter of power, as I said, it's a matter of drivers. It's a fact that the 90-series drivers are absolute youknowwhat and since they're pretty much the only ones the 7600GS work with..

I had a Radeon 9600 before, worked like a dream.

the drivers supplied by ms for vista for the 7600 were from the 64's series and they worked no problems i have only just upgraded to the vista beta release from them

I have XP, as you can see.
If only you could understand finnish(I'm from Finland), I could direct you to a certain forum that's filled with people complaining about the 90-series drivers screwing up their computers(not being able to play back videos, games have weird white stripes, rain turns to black blocks in some games, etc etc).

It's well known that the 90-series drivers are not as stable as earlier versions. That's why I suggested trying 84.21.

If you're sure it's a driver problem, uninstall the current driver again, reboot and select VGA mode from the menu. Disable antivirus and install Forceware 93.71 (which is supposed to be the most compatible with the 7600GS AGP), then reboot again.

Have you also installed the motherboard chipset drivers and DirectX?

Have you tried dropping the hardware acceleration level or watching videos with overlays disabled?
