Hi, a few weeks ago i came back from school to find that my computer off. I tried booting up like usuall and it didnt go through the XP login screen before freezing. After taking my video card out and using my onboard chip it booted up normaly and worked fine afterwards. So i got an RMA and got a "new/repaired" card and after popping it in, it does the same thing. When i boot up the fans work fine on the cpu. So i dont think its the CPU. my video card is a GIGABYTE GV-RX13P256DE-RH Radeon X1300PRO 256MB GDDR2 PCI Express x16 Silent Pipe II, Lead Free Video Card
I have XP, 1.5 GB of RAM, 2.2 GHz AMD Athlon 64 3500+ I've had this video card for about 3-4 months before the problem happened. I just dont know how it can work one second then not work the next. Even after my RMA was sent back it still doesn't work.Any suggestions on what the problem might be? If you need more info on my machine feel free to ask. |

try installing the latest drivers from ATI.
also make sure your pcie is set to master video car dand the onboard is disabled in the bios. also try doing a system restore when your using ur onboard, press f8 when booting select safe mode and let it load. then select no and go and select a date where you know your computer worked. NOTE: store all your saved documents and backup anything thats needed school work etc etc etc cause stuff can get lost in the process of restoring.

i checked and the card is inserted correctly with the monitor cable connected to the video card. the thing with uninstalling the drivers is that, yesterday i was able to load in with my ATI card and was running fine (cased closed) for about 5 minutes. then i went to start up a game and i loaded in the game fine. about 5 min into the game my computer froze. another thing is that everyhting else worked fine during the freeze. if i pressed the F-lock key on my keyboard the light on the keyboard would flash on and off as usual. that's is where i am getting confuzed. There wasnt any storm or anyhting like that at the day of the 1st symptom.
My motherboard is a ASUSTek Computer INC. Also my computer is a Compaq Presario SR1650NX im prety sure it might be this one Amazon.com: Compaq Presario SR1650NX Desktop PC (AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Processor, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB Hard Drive, LightScribe Dbl Layer 16X DVD+/-R/RW Drive): Computers & PC Hardware My Power Supply is a HIPRO with a max output power of 300W. i got this computer about 3/4 of a year ago and it worked fine for 3-4 months with my new video card before this happened. I did a little bit of research and i wanted to ask you guys if this might be the problem. mabey it is an airflow problem. or could it possibly be just overheating of the card? because sometimes when i start my computer when my card is at room temp. it sometimes goes all the way to desktop. but if i start it up with a semi warm card, it doesnt make it as far. Also everything else loads fine with the card except the card. (CPU, fans, keyboard, mouse, HD, ect) if you need any more questions feel free to ask. |

it could definatly be a temperature as you told us that when the case is open the card works fine but monce closed it crashes. take a room fan and put it next to the case when its open and play around and see if it still crashes.
how many fans are in your case ? i would recommend possibly getting a 80mm or 120mm fan in the back if there isnt already one. also i would then recommend adding a PCI slot cooler, those can help alot. is the 7600 cooled passively ? BTW the 300watts PSU might not cut it for the computer to work efficiently and this might also cause the crashes.

i think i might have writen it wrong but it pretty much does the same thing (freezes) with case open and case closed.
but right now im leaning towards a power supply problem and/or a overheating/airflow problem. because if i boot the computer with a room temp video card, it will make it farther than a warm or hot video card. any thought on this? ...........also any suggestions on a PCI slot cooler and where to get a good one. like from newegg.com or a retail store?
