Radeon 9600 Pro and PCChips M811 incompatible?

Hello,
I recently purchased a Sapphire Radeon 9600XT that would not allow anything to show on my screen even though all fans were spinning and the screen would remain black until I shut it off with the power button. I searched online and found one or two things saying that the PCChips M811LU v3.1 motherboard would not usually cooperate with this graphics card. I then RMA'd it back to the company and got a Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro in hopes of this working. Again, I uninstalled the drivers for my current graphics card, shut down my system, and seated the new card. Once again all the fans would start spinning, but nothing would show up on my screen. In my bios I have AGP 4X set, but I don't really know what else to do. Any recommendations/help at all would be greatly appreciated because I'm on a budget so don't want to upgrade my motherboard, yet no longer want my noname 32MB graphics card anymore. Thank you in advance!

Welcome to TSF, MagicShorty.

We really need to know your system specs. I noticed you reading the "Posting System Specs" thread - just follow the instructions there on what to post and how to find it. Post your specs here, and we'll take a look.

Ok, I put this into the My System drop down box, however that might not be showing up, not sure if I set it up properly, here are my specs:

PSU: Antec 350W +12V 16A

Mobo: PCChips M811LU v3.1

CPU: AMD Athlon XP 2200+

RAM: 2X512MB Patriot PC3200 (Running at 333 instead of 400 I believe... not sure, can check if needed)

Video Card: Well... I'm not sure how to check name (can't find anywhere on card... and kinda new to this, sorry) but I can give you this NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro (Microsoft Corporation) as my Driver, and I know its 32.0MB when comp first starts booting up

Hard Drives: Maxtor 40GB 24GB free, Maxtor 250GB 184GB free (slave)

OS:Windows XP5.1 (Build 2600) Service Pack 2

I hope this helps with whatever you need! Anything else I will try to get you, once again sorry for not knowing exact name of card. Thanks again!

By any chance does this PC use a KT4 Ultra chipset? I know that they didn't do well with the 9600 series.

It appears that it is a VIA chipset... however I could very well be mistaken. It says VIA on a chip on the motherboard to the right of my PCI slots... Hope this helps!

It uses the KT266 chipset, which is rather old. I don't know of any incompatibilities between them and the 9600 chip. I do know, however, that PCChips boards and quality don't show up in the same sentence.

Addendum...

I looked around more and found that many people have trouble getting the 9600's and higher to work with this board.

Thank you very much for the help! I've decided to upgrade my motherboard enough to support the graphics card at least, even though I plan on getting a laptop for college. I'm open to any suggestions, but thank you very much for the imformation. It has been really helpful even though it may seem simple.

For laptops I have two picks: Acer and IBM. Acers are cheap but powerful and reliable. IBMs are expensive but very powerful and very reliable. I can't recommend Dell, Compaq, HP, Sony, Toshiba, or most other brands due to the failure rate I've seen with them.
