Do I even have a graphics card!!!

My insurance company replaced my computer when mine was stolen the latest one I have doesnt play certain games and it is always graphics issues. I am wondering if i even have one or is it just not working properly

For example I have just bought titan quest and every time I try and play it get the message failure couldnt initalize graphics engine.

When I click on display it says I have a plug and play monitor on MSI MS-star force GEforce4 MX 4000 (NVIDA Geforce4 MX 4000).

Also my flat screen monitor a 19" noc LM965 mointor is very grainy and worse quality than my bog standard dell 'fat' monitor.

Any help would be much appreciated

It's not really that old. Just very low budget. You may want to download the latest drivers.

Unfortunately, you've been caught by one of NVIDIA's worst naming choices. A GeForce4 MX 4000 is actually a slightly updated version of a GeForce 2 MX. So it's really a GeForce 2 and not a GeForce 4. GeForce 2s are DirectX 7 cards. If a game requires a GeForce 3 then it probably needs pixel or vertex shaders. Those are only supported by DirectX 8 cards and up. So a GeForce4 MX 4000 is too old to run a game which requires a DirectX 8 support like a GeForce 3.

The GF3 cards supported DirectX 8 (SM 1.1). The GeForce 4Ti series supported DirectX 8.1 (SM 1.3-1.4). The GeForce FX5200 was a direct replacement for the 4Ti's.
