Computer screen wont turn on with video card
Hello everyone. I have a question my parents computer screen wont turn on with the ATI All in wonder X800(AGP). It worked for like 3 days(with the new video card) then I was having a LAN party at my house and we had a power surge and when we got power the computer still worked for that day but then the next day the screen wouldnt turn on. And yes i checked if the CPU can handle the video card and it can so can the motherboard its an AMD atholon XP. I have practicly tried everything to c y the screen wont turn on. The screen will turn on without the video card inside the computer. But when i tried to put my old one back in the screen still wont come up but the computer is running. I dont know if its AGP slot itself that is broken or if its something else :/. Yes ive tried the hard drives, ram, floppy drive, cd drive to c if its the problem but its not. I have pinpointed down that its something to do with the AGP slot. I tried the ATI All in wonder in a different computer and it ran great. So... anyone have any ideas.

You seem to have narrowed it down quite well, good job. Do you have a spare AGP video card (any) to confirm your theory with the AGP slot?

Yes i put my old AGP video card back in (which still works) and the same thing happend. So... do you think if i replace the AGP slot with a new one it will work? Iam just worrying if its not that because my friend said it might be the CPU. which i doupt... because the video card is compatable with it. :/ O ya I also tried a bigger power supply but that wasnt it. :/ I want to know how come it stoped working. I still havent figured that out because it worked a full day after the power surge...then the next morning the screen wouldnt go on but the computer is running. Iam wondering if i can VNC the computer with the video card in it to see if i would be able to see the screen.

1. u cant replace the AGP slot todo that u need to get a new motherboard
2. it could be the cpu but i doubt it. 3. reset the CMOS on the motherboard and make sure the external power connector to the x800 is connected. since u tried with another video card and it didnt work im guesstimating that something besides the video card is messed up. the motherboard is a gig chance

If the computer works normally when connected to the onboard then its not the cpu! or am I missing something? |

Well seeing as the computer with the video card worked prior to the power surge and it works with the onboard it must be one of two things,,,,
The surge killed the video card, try it in another compatible computer. Or the surge somehow weakend the power supply where it is not producing the requirerd amps to power the card, this is the least likely but a possibility |

I tried putting it in another computer and it works... And I ave tried a new power supply also which had 600W or something. I had tried reseting the cmos also, didnt work... Iam not sure what could be confiliciting with the video card do you think its the motherboard or the cpu?

mscott2273 could be right about the agp slot but before you give up on the motherboard try the video card again and this 600W psu, tells us the brand and model number.
If this psu came with a case or is a cheap generic brand testing with it is inconclusive |
