graphics card maybe??

My computer will run fine for a while then all of a sudden it makes a kind of higher pitch noise and the frame rate goes right down to an unplayable level, this only happens playing games and occasionally whilst watching videos. I thought it must be the graphics card but its happened with a few different ones. The one im using at the moment is an nvidia geforce 6600 GT. If anyone has any ideas please let me know or any suggestions where to get this sorted would be appreciated.

after u get that loss of FPS does the computer crash or is the computer still usuable ?

also please post the specs of the Power Supply (specs can be found on the side of the PSU usually on a sticker)

the computer still runs, someone suggested it was overheating and the noise was the fan kicking in. the psu is 400w

when u are normally gaming is the fan spinning ?

could be due to over heating but im not entirely sure yet

i cant really tell if the fan on the graphics card is spinning, ive tried having the case open and looking but i cant really see

its not a passive cooled card is it ? when the case is open hold a mirror down next to the card and look at the mirror if its too dark shine a flashlight on the card.
