GeForce 5500fx

I haven't used this computer in a month. I haven't recently made any significant software or hardware changes

When I boot normally, my computer would freeze and my screen would become black. This happens about 80% of the time. During the other 20%, it would randomly freeze if I were using a program which utilizes my graphics card such as a video game. Note that I would have no problems running a video game....for about 15 minutes

I found out my videocard is the culprit and I have it disabled. I tried system restore to a previous date and reinstalling drivers. Neither work.

Any tips? Is it time to shell out money for a new video card?

you need to post some system specs. Do you have on board video?
If so that should have been disabled in bios, drivers removed prior to
installing the 5500. No necessarliy bad video card.

The videocard has been running fine for nearly two years before this happened

System specs
--------------

ASUS motherboard A7N8X-E
AMD Athlon XP 2800
1 gig RAM

Not sure what else you need to know

Quick question: Nforce drivers = Display drivers?

I think the nforce drivers are chipset drivers. Not familiar with the chipset
on the board. Is it a nvidia chipset? Go to www.nvidia.com for drivers,
select geforce and follow the prompts, just to make sure.

Hmmm...it's still prompts me to download Nforce drivers when i select drivers from my graphics card. I thought Nforce \= display drivers

The problems are far too consistent for it to be a power supply problem. Otherwise, I'd be having problems even when my video card is disabled

your less likely to have problems running the onboard as the card requires more power
when you upgrade video it runs hand in hand with the power supply requirements being upgraded at the same time

Nforce drivers are for your mobo=motherboard drivers. These drivers
should/must be installed. See if your mobo has a nvidia chipset northbridge/
south. The mobo drivers tell the chipset how to handle agp, ide, usb.

PSU Specs

This is what it says on the side of my PSU. I bought it about two years ago

Enermax
Model EG365P-VE
SFCA - ATX 12 V Ver 1.3
350 Watts
AC input 115v/230v - 50-60hz, 10a/6a

My motherboard has an Nforce chipset and the proper MOBO drivers are installed. I don't know why it prompts me to download nforce drivers when I ask for display drivers on Nvidia's website.

If the mobo drivers have not been updated for two years,,or more. No
telling how old the mobo drivers are. Why would it prompt you prior to
installing new video drivers? Maybe the driver is telling you that it cannot
operate properly with the current chipset driver. So what would it hurt to
install the latest chipset driver? Take a chance the pilgrims did.
