New AM2 Pc
Hi All
I recently sold my: AMD Athlon 2400+ Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe Motherboard 1gig Memory 256mb HIS EXCALIBUR RADEON X700 256MB 128-BIT (CORE CLOCK 425MHZ, MEMORY CLOCK 860MHZ, RAMDAC 400MHZ, 8 pixel pipeline) and bought myself: AM2 pc AMD Athlon 64 3500 Asus M2npv-mx Motherboard 1gig Memory 256mb Gecube x1600xt PCI Express (CORE CLOCK 590MHZ , MEMORY CLOCK 800MHZ , 12 PIXEL PIPELINES) 3Dmark 2003 With my old machine I got a score of 8850(overcclocked) and 6743 (standard) With my new machine I am getting a score of 7800. Should'nt I be getting alot more with my new machine?? A couple of things I noticed is when I check the hardware properties under CATALYST it shows that my Graphics card has a clock speed of 587mhz and a memory speed of 396mhz when the latter should be 800mhz. The x1600xt is installed as a x1600 Series. One other small issue. I can not clone my TV since installing my new graphics card. Normally you would just drag the detected TV icon to the right hand block in Display settings, but the box is greyed out. I can either view one or the other - not both at the same time. I am currently using the 6.8 Catalyst drivers, I tried the 5.10a Catalyst drivers as well as the latest Omega drivers. Thanx |

That card has either DDR2 or GDDR3 memory, which is Double Data Rate. This means that the memory effictively runs as twice the speed. So if you multiply 396Mhz by two, you get 792Mhz, which is the 800Mhz you were expecting. Some companies use the actual speed, or if they want to impress you they'll use the effictive speed.

First off, make sure all the necessary drivers are installed and up to date. Secenly, synthetic benchmarks like 3DMark may be pretty, but they don't offer a real-world view of your performance. I suggest running Everest Home to get a good picture of where your system stands. If some settings are off then it'll translate to a drop in performance. Also, take advantage of ANY feature your new hardware offers. If it supports dual-channel RAM, use it! Make sure bus speeds are set accordingly and that you're running with a clean installation.

All my drivers are up to date. I installed Windows twice because I thought there might have been issues with the first install. (Both clean installs). I will try Everest Home and get back to you. I have dual channel support for my memory but I am currently using one 1 gig strip. I don't have the cash to get another straight away

The 256-bit memory bus is the part that'll kill your performance. Get something with a 256-bit and you'll be gold.

x700 SM2
x1600XT SM3 BTW SM = Shader Model i had a x800xl AGP (still have it) got better 3dmark scores then in my new setup with a x1600pro but like someone stated real world games count. x700 vs x1600xt in lets say Source engine etc. the x1600xt will pwn the x700 due to it utilizing SM3. then again i have the 512mb version wich kinda matches the 256mb gddr3. Source Stats: new rig (game rig in my sig) constant 100-170fps with aa and af on 8 and 4 everything on high old right (work rig in sig) constant 50-70fps with aa and af on 4 and 2 everything on high then again cpu matters
