eVGA 7900GT Crashes/Freezing

Hey, so I reciently put together my new computer. It all went together just fine, but now I have been encountering some weird crashes and freezing. It seems to only be when I'm playing a game, which leads me to believe that it is the video card. I have This video card. I will be playing a game, and it will randomly freeze, and I will have to do a hard reboot. Another issue, is that occasionally when I start a game, it will fill the entire screen with colored streaks. I can get this to go away by hitting the windows key, and then maximizing it again. The temperature after gaming is about 57C (51C idle), and I'm using the 84.21 drivers. Thanks for your help.

Hi Lifeismusic,

Please post your full system specs (see "Posting System Specs" in my signature).

Sounds like a faulty video card. Do you have another PCI-E card you can swap in for testing?

Ahaha, what kind of graphics card do you have? Nvidia cards cannot run antialiasing and High Dynamic Range lighting at the same time. Therefore if your graphics card supports both and you have them both turned on in a game it would cause it to crash.
That was quoted by Cliffard in another thread.

He may have something here even though I have never seen this with my En7900GT. I would turn off antialiasing in the Nvidia CP & see what happens.

I also in fact have a 7900gt(Which pwns btw). I haven't experienced any problems with it. Maybe I'll tweak around with mine and try to see what your problem could be.

Here you go.

Motherboard – Asus M2n-SLI Deluxe AM2

CPU – AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ AM2 2.2Ghz

RAM – Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800 2x1Gb 5.5.5.12 (I had to set this in bios to comply with what they were supposed to be running at)

Video Card – eVGA 7900GT KO PCI-Express 256MB

Hard Drive – WD Cavier SE16 SATA 250GB.

Power Supply – FSP Epsilon FX600-GLN 600W 4x +12V@15A= 60A total

@Indoril Nerevar - Sadly I don't have another PCI-E card I can swap in, or access to one.

@MhzManiac - I've heard of this too, and I've made sure that I'm not trying to run HDR and AA at the same time. I know that Oblivion won't let you even select both at the same time.

[EDIT] I've attached a pic of what the monitor looks like with the streaking. This time it was gray. I should also note that this did NOT happen while gaming. I had to hit alt+f4 several times to close programs to get it to go away.

@Clifford - Yeah, it really does pwn.

Same here. I haven't had any problems with my card. Though I am running the 91.31 drivers. Try using those drivers and see if they will work.

The card is faulty, and you need to send it back for a replacement. I doubt the drivers will make any difference, and I would use the 84.21's over the 91.31's anyway, as the 91.31's have proved to be unstable.

Yeah, I was afraid of that. Should I send it to newegg (where I bought it) or to eVGA?

eVGA first. If you didn't tinker with the card I would send it directly to them

Really? I thought it would be better to send it to newegg. I have always had good experiences with newegg.

I don't buy from newegg, so I'm not sure how they work, but my first thought would be to send it to them. Perhaps email them and ask what they recommend?

Well you could send it into newegg and see what they would do. My opinion would be to send to to eVGA since they designed the card and all.

depends on what you meant by tinkering with i am a member over at the evga forum as well. overclocking ,and aftermarket coolers DO NOT void the warranty as long as you dont physically damage the card while swapping coolers.

Does overclocking affect the warranty? The only reason I haven't overclocked is because if I had problems with the card I wouldn't be able to send it back.

Hi,

There are a lot of bad 7900gt's out there at the moment - just google ''7900gt problems' and see what you get - I got a faulty xfx one a couple of weeks ago which was RMA'd and replaced by ebuyer.co.uk with no questions asked. Classic symptoms are artefacting / crashing to WINDOWS blue screen of death and the classic blinking screen of death at the desktop when the screen flashes on and off when you move the mouse. Apparrenlty its to do with the regulators on the back of the card overheating which damages the gpu. The issue is more common amongst pre - overclocked cards...

Phil.

yes its true you can change the cooler, and it wont void the warranty unless you do physical damage to the card.you can overclock without voiding the warranty as well this is evga specific i cant say about other companies. this part kinda sucks though if you are in europe changing the cooler will void the warranty, but here in the USA you are fine to do it.

edit: what phil said is the truth there were crap loads of bad 7900's in fact the problem was so bad xfx closed there message board
