dxdiag does not recognize any memory on my display adapter
After starting DirectX diagnostics, I saw that under the "Display" tab, next to "Approx. total memory," it says "n/a." This is causing problems with at least one game (Civ IV) and possibly another (Europa Universalis). Anyways, here are my specs, and is there some way to get Windows to recognize my video card's memory? If you know of another way to get the games working, that would be helpful too (I don't think that Civ IV is going to be an easy one), but mainly I'm concerned about the fact that Windows doesn't have a grip on my video card.

Your laptop uses the Intel 915GM chipset. It dynamically allocates video RAM only when needed. That's why DXDiag returns n/a for amount of video RAM. Your DXDiag says "RAM: 1016 MB RAM" which means that 8MB of RAM is permanently allocated for video RAM and the rest is allocated dynamically. This page gives some info on how it handles video RAM. Apparently, 8MB is the maximum amount you can permanently allocate as video RAM. Assuming the n/a is causing your game problems, you might check for game patches for this kind of chipset. Intel chipsets like this are common so games need to be able to handle dynamically allocated video RAM.
